We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kristi Brooks a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, Kristi thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.

I understand my decision to become a full-time Wedding Officiant and PreMarriage Coach, is a HUGE risk from the outside looking in. With the ability to get ordained in 5 minutes online, there aren’t many of us out there that choose this job for a living.

But what others see as taking a risk, is my total leap of faith. When you’re “called” to something, I believe you have a responsibility to answer that call, even if some find it ridiculous.

I began this career journey because I longed for a job that was meaningful; not only to me but to others. In this crazy world we live in, waking up every day to share and celebrate love, life’s greatest gift was a revelation.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

I’m a full-time Wedding Officiant based out Greater Grand Rapids Michigan. Most often, my staff and I work with couples that want to celebrate their day in the most personal way possible. They consider their love and relationship outside the box of traditional and want more of a ceremony experience they and their guests will never forget. I give them just that by writing original ceremonies from scratch from the ground up inspired by the magic of their personal love story.

As a PreMarriage Coach, I also help engaged couples prepare for their new marriage by giving them the tools they need to communicate effectively, successfully resolve conflict and create a deeper connection with their partner so they can experience a fulfilling marriage that lasts a lifetime.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?

A huge lesson I had to unlearn is the lie, “you can’t begin a new career after 40.”

I was born with an entrepreneurial spirit, but truth be told the jobs I’ve had over the years just didn’t seem to “fit”. i think it was partially because I worked in fields that I was interested in, but was never truly passionate about.

I started this business when I was in my late 40’s in a field completely opposite of my working background. But, what makes this different from the other jobs I’ve held is that it’s what I feel I was “called” to do. And when you’re “called” to something, the only thing that matters is that you answer the call. I’m so grateful that I found what I was truly meant to do.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?

My company’s reputation wouldn’t be what it is without the positive feedback and reviews from my couples over the years. Their input helps me continuously connect with other couples looking for an out-of-the-box ceremony experience.
