We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kristen Whirley a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kristen , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you tell us a story about a time you failed?
I think most people who garden will tell
you, plan to fail. There are so many things to consider when growing flowers or plants, and there is much that is out of your control. It has taught me many lessons about how to adapt to our life circumstances. There will be seasons that are easy, and seasons that are more challenging. Our second year being open was a big failure because it was so dry, and we were unprepared to water such a large area. The next year we came back ready, and it was better than ever. Sometimes you have to experience failures to learn and grow. After all, “Success is buried in the garden of failure.”-Rick Wakeman
Kristen , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
This chapter of our story began the year Covid hit. We all remember that time and how being outside in the fresh air was a good place to be. This idea was not my own, but came from praying about how our backyard could be used. I remember clearly mowing our back field while having a chat with Jesus, and instantly feeling wildflowers in my soul. I knew right then, that we would share the wildflowers fields so that others would have a beautiful space for family photos. We get so much joy seeing each and every photo that comes from the wildflowers, and now our Sun Porch too. This home is very special to me as it was my grandparents, and I grew up playing right in the backyard. It’s an honor to be able to take what they built, make it our own, and still be able to share apart of their legacy. It’s our hope that everyone who comes to visit feels a sense of peace and happiness.
How did you build your audience on social media?
For us, social media was the first step in getting the word out about our wildflowers, without it, I’m not sure how we would’ve grown to what we have. We wanted to earn our followers organically and we wouldn’t have been able to do that without all the wonderful photographers sharing their photos. So huge shout out to each and every photog who has contributed, tagged us or shared a post, that is truly what has helped us grow. As far as advice for others trying to grow their social media, invest is professional photos for whatever you are promoting. It’s worth it.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth is the best source of new clients. What an honor to be recommended by others. If people are recommending us, then we are doing something right. As I said earlier, we want our followers and visitors to come organically and we are thankful for each one.
