Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kristen Poulter. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kristen, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
During my early childhood years when my parents were still together, before my parents divorced and my family became a blended family, my earliest memories were of my father playing the guitar and singing songs to me and my two younger sisters. I gained a love for music from my father Brett Clinton McElwaney. He wrote and composed some of the songs he would sing to us and I would sit near him and write poetry. He often said I would be the lyricist, and my youngest sister the vocalist. I would laugh and say maybe or maybe I will write books. In my teen years I wrote the books, my early adult years I gave it all up and studied medicine, when I became ill I picked up my pen again except not for poetry, I started writing songs, and to my dad’s shock, I began singing what I wrote as a bonus.
Now that my father who passed away in July 2024, I wish I had started earlier, way earlier, because I feel I could have learned so much more from him, I would have loved to have just at least have gotten the chance to collaborate with him once. I feel his loss in itself is a obstacle that has recently stunted my growth in the music industry.
Kristen, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My Name is Kristen M. Poulter and I am many things but mainly a lyricist in the music industry who goes by the pseudonym Pen Name Moon, which in itself is a play on words. I originally came from next door the writing industry where I was a published author, a poet by the age of 12. I’m also a nurse, Amazon influencer for their products and their music, a Tim Burton Brand Amabassdor, a ordained minister, a tutor, founder of a independent label that assists independent artists and authors, I’m also a poet, content creator, vlogger, affiliate for many brands as well, and more.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is to have my words heard in hopes of changing perceptions for the better in our world. I strive to stir emotions like empathy in others. I also since July after the passing of my father, strive to make him proud in hopes he is smiling down at me from heaven. I distributed one of his songs from a recording given to me of him playing the guitar and singing one called “Deeze Blues, White Picket Fence” to honor his memory and so me and my sisters can always hear our dad sing to us.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
My big heart, as I will help anyone because I myself didn’t receive hardly any. I hope one day people stop seeing each other as competition or an obstacle and start building each other up without a fee.
My authentic self, I will never change and always be who I am. I’m not running around out here portraying myself as some brand or sell out, no amount of success will change that. I’m real and genuine.
My stubborn drive that keeps me going. My earlier stuff had no direction or often no rhythm or structure. No amount of bad reviews or even trolling stopped me and recently I got to walk the red carpet. If I had let people tear me down in the beginning I never would have gotten as far as I have and I plan to keep going.
