Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kristen Phillips. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kristen, appreciate you joining us today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
I am so much happier as a business owner because I know without a doubt that I am living my true purpose now. Having bounced from sales job to sales job over the last couple of decades, I knew that there had to be more to life. I would be happy in a regular job for a little while and then I would get this soul-sucking feeling that I was wasting my life away and not making a difference in the world. When I finally figured out what I was going to do and got a business plan together, everything changed. I quit the corporate world and opened a business that helps people in a multitude of ways. Not only am I helping other small businesses thrive, I’m providing a center full of resources to help the public. Although I work hard and sometimes long hours, I never truly feel like I am working. Those days ended as soon as I stepped away from the corporate world. As a new business owner, there have certainly been times that I have thought about how nice it would be to have a regular job for the paycheck and insurance, However, the fulfillment of running my own business that is helping so many other people is really the best form of payment!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My background is all sales and marketing with various companies and industries. I always knew that I wanted to own my own business and I knew that it would likely have something to do with health and wellness. I love living a healthy lifestyle so I knew that bringing that aspect into a business would be key for me. I started dreaming up the concept of Soul Wellness as I learned about more and more holistic providers in my area looking for a place to practice. I thought to myself how amazing it would be to have various resources in one place. I wanted to create a synergy between providers where they would refer to each other for the ultimate benefit of their patients/clients. Slowly but surely, the Soul Wellness business plan was created. From there, I continued to interview providers in my area to find out exactly what type of center would benefit them the most and what type of amenities would they need. I learned that classroom space was a big-ticket item on everyone’s list so, I incorporated 2 classrooms into the floor plan. I listened intently and continued to tweak the center until I felt like it was optimal. I quickly found a place and construction began without a glitch. I knew this business was meant to be! Soul Wellness has 30 suites, 2 classrooms and a large breakroom for tenants. Four of our suites are fully furnished so that providers have the option to rent a treatment room for a half or full day. Our unfurnished suites are available to rent month-to-month, so no commitment is necessary. The classrooms are available for the public to rent which brings new faces into the center and creates more awareness of the many services offered. I am most proud of the enormous array of healing services offered at our center. I know that when someone walks through our doors with a physical, mental, emotional or spiritual issue, we have resources for them. Not only will they get the healing that they need, every relationship that they have will get healed in a way as well. The work that takes place at Soul Wellness is truly exponential.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Soul Wellness officially opened on January 4, 2021 in the middle of Covid. That alone took a lot of faith, persistence and resilience. The business did not take off as fast as I thought it would. However, the way the center came together with such ease and speed, I knew without a doubt, it was meant to be. I had to give myself a lot of pep talks and continue to forge ahead. I never stopped planting seeds and reaching out to holistic providers in the area to let them know about Soul Wellness. I was always amazed at how I could connect with someone and then 6 months to a year later, that person would become a tenant. That alone showed me that staying the course was key. Timing is always divine, and I knew to never lose focus on the end goal of having a full, thriving wellness center.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I think the best source of new clients for me has been word of mouth from existing tenants. My tenants know that I am their biggest cheerleader. It is in my best interest that they are thriving so they know I am always willing to help them with marketing ideas. My background is sales and marketing so they have access to me if they need advice or someone to brainstorm ideas with. Many of the providers don’t have a business background and don’t really like the marketing aspect of their business. That is where I can help and provide them with more than just a space to practice. Another good source has been some of the schools in our area. We have cosmetology and massage schools close by that I have regularly visited and presented to.
