We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kristen Moon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristen, thanks for joining us today. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
I have always been an entrepreneur at heart. I worked for numerous years in corporate America. I hated every minute of it, yet I did it for years. I just assumed that was what people do after college. Every Monday I would ask myself – is it Friday yet? Chasing my dream and taking the first step was the best decision I ever made. My only regret was not starting sooner. I feel like I am living my authentic life now. I love my work, love my clients, and I wake up every day ready to make an impact.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Moon Prep is an educational consultancy that guides students on their path to medicine. We are a team of independent counselors who work one-on-one with students on medical school and direct medical applications. My team specializes in a very niche area of admissions – direct medical programs. Nearly 80% of our students are pursuing BS/MD and BS/DO programs. These programs are highly competitive with many programs offering less than 10 seats per cycle.
There is no boilerplate in university applications, and grades are not enough to get accepted. Moon Prep counselors help students build a profile that stands out in more ways than high grades and test scores. Our counselors are committed to our students and are committed to helping them get accepted to their top-choice schools.

My first years as an entrepreneur were difficult financially. I did not even break even my first year. I think many people in my position would have quit. It is hard to work long hours and not be compensated for it. But, hang in there because the tide will turn. The first few years lay the groundwork for success. It takes time to build a brand and a name for yourself. Don’t expect overnight results.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
They say the “riches are in the niches” and it’s true. Do not try to cater to everyone. Pick your specific market and become a leader in that niche field. I have a clear idea of who my target customer is and that is who I target, I am not going for the masses.
