Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kristen McNeely. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Kristen, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
I remember the moment I knew I needed to start my own practice. I had been stopped in the parking lot of my son’s school and asked, for what felt like the upteenth time, about a challenging behavior scenario. I knew then that I could make an impact in working with parents and decided to go for it. But I quickly learned that while mental and behavioral health was an area of expertise, business is not! What I always try to fall back on is just being myself. I don’t need to sell myself, I just need to be myself, and the right people will come.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California. I work part time as a Behavior Specialist for a local school district where I’ve developed expertise in IEP and 504 plan support. I also have a part-time private practice where I work with parents of children with Anxiety or other behavioral disorders. I give them tangible, actionable tools that they can implement right away in supporting their child.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
When I first started I thought I could just advertise through Instagram and people would come to me. But growing a business doesn’t work that way! I’ve found networking to be my biggest key to growth – connecting with other therapists and providers in related fields is really what started my momentum.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Maintaining professionalism and high standards of care for the people I work with has helped build my reputation. People know that they can trust my word and that I’m consistent.
