We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kristen Massinburg . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kristen below.
Hi Kristen, thanks for joining us today. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
When I graduated high school, I decided to start putting my work out there to gain clientele. I began posting in Facebook groups and on Facebook market place as much as I could.
My start off price was definitely a low rate to gain clientele and build my portfolio. I started taking these clients in the back of my mother tax office. Yes, the clients had to walk through a tax office to get to my then makeup room. I am grateful for those who gave me that chance!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Kristen Massinburg and about 4 years ago today, I took a leap of faith and moved to Dallas with about $1500 and no job lined up. Just prayer and faith. I was able to take makeup clients in my sisters salon thankfully. From there I began working to build my clientele and make a name and life for myself in the beauty industry!
I worked at MAC for about 2 years and then ended up going to esthetician school to expand my knowledge. As the years pass by I continued to network and build my clientele. Within a few years I was able to build a good clientele base of amazing people that supported me and my goals.
Now, I provide makeup, lash extension and waxing services. I am looking forward to continue to grow my business and create jobs for other makeup artists who are trying to get their start.
At CakedByKe we strive to make our guests feel comfortable and build a genuine connection with them. This is what sets us apart as well as helps to attract like minded genuine clients.
Be on the look out because CakedByKe is not done growing.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
There came a point in time where I was working full time going to school full time and doing makeup building my brand. I got to a point where I could barely focus on my school work because of being mentally exhausted from work. I tried adjusting my schedule to work earlier shifts and it only made me more physically tired. I was unhappy and drained, trying to do my best.
I was sick of it. I was ready to work completely in the beauty field. I decided to pause on my bachelors degree and get my associates degree. I then quit my job and started esthetician school while only doing makeup on the weekends. I was nervous as to if I would make enough money to cover bills, but God!

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When my father recently passed, I had to fight through it while still trying to stay afloat and run my business. I can’t express enough how God has just been carrying me through this thing called life. I never knew how strong I could be until I had no other choice but to walk in strength and faith,
