Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kristen Kabrin. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kristen, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Kristen Kabrin, a nature enthusiast and a devoted photographer who finds solace and joy in capturing the beauty of the world around me. Nestled in the picturesque landscapes of Northern Nevada, I embarked on a journey through life’s lens that has led me to moments of pure connection with nature and the serene simplicity it offers.
I was born somewhere North of my current home of Northern Nevada, my academic journey took me down a different path, but my heart found its true calling in photography. I worked for the University of Nevada, Reno as an Administrative Assistant for the Political Science Department for 25 years. Photography was my escape on the weekends. It got me out with my dogs exploring the areas, first around my home and then the circles became larger and larger. The great outdoors beckoned me, inviting me to frame the scenes that resonate with my soul.
My photographic journey has been enriched by the guidance and camaraderie of local photographers who generously shared their wisdom, time, and friendship. Here, I also met my partner in crime and fellow photographer who gave me the push to retire from the University, start photography full-time.
It has taken me about a decade, but I have developed a personal style and shoot what I really love and I think that comes through the story-telling of photography. For me, photography is more than a craft; it’s a means of expression. It allows me to convey my thoughts and emotions, providing me with the opportunity to pause, breathe, and connect with the world. Through my lens, I open a door to greet the world, sharing my unique perspective, one frame at a time.
There are several things that has drawn me and kept me enamored with photography, such as:
- There is always something to learn. I am always on the lookout for new editing techniques and photography trends. Staying up-to-date with the latest advancements in technology and post-processing allows me to create unique and captivating images that stand out from the rest.
- Looking for a new way to frame the scene. I make it a point to experiment with various lenses and angles to capture a fresh perspective of familiar scenes. This willingness to explore different viewpoints helps me create visually stunning and thought-provoking photographs.
- I have learned patience and persistence. I understand the importance of waiting for the perfect moment, especially when shooting wildlife or in challenging weather conditions. I am willing to spend hours or return multiple times to a location to ensure I capture the ideal shot. This dedication often results in images that others may miss.
- I love the multitude of printing mediums. The trend as of late has been printing on metal or acrylic. I do enjoy those mediums, but I choose to print my photographs on watercolor paper and apply an archival coating. This not only enhances the tactile quality of the prints but also eliminates reflective properties, allowing the viewer to immerse themselves fully in the image.
I am most proud of my evolving photography style, particularly my storytelling abilities. In the past, my photography was mainly about capturing quick snapshots of beautiful scenes. However, I’ve since transitioned into a more intentional approach where I seek to capture moments that go beyond mere aesthetics.
Through the lens, I now aim to convey the beauty, emotion, and stories that I encounter in the world around me. I believe that photography is a powerful medium for sharing the essence of life itself. Instead of just taking pretty pictures, I strive to freeze moments in time that evoke emotions and tell a deeper story.
This transformation in my photography represents a personal growth in my artistry and a deeper connection with the subjects I photograph. I take pride in the fact that I can now use my camera to not only showcase the external beauty of the world but also to reveal the intricate narratives and emotions that lie beneath the surface. It’s a testament to my commitment to honing my craft and capturing the richness of life through my lens.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Imagine photography as a multifaceted art form, much like painting or sculpture. At first glance, it may seem like anyone can pick up a camera, point, and shoot, just as anyone can pick up a paintbrush and apply colors to a canvas. However, there’s a profound difference that sets photography apart.
When I apply to art shows and galleries as a photographer, I encounter the misconception that photography is merely a matter of pushing a button on a fancy camera. This perception can be initially frustrating and demoralizing, but I’ve come to see these encounters as opportunities for education.
The essence of photography lies beyond the camera itself. Ansel Adams aptly stated that “The single most important component of a camera is the twelve inches behind it.” In other words, the camera is just a tool. The true magic unfolds in the mind and eye of the photographer.
What truly defines photography is your unique perspective, your way of seeing the world, and your ability to translate that vision into a captivating image. Every photograph taken is a reflection of your creative spirit, your technical skill, and your storytelling ability. It’s not just about the equipment; it’s about how you use it.
When someone says, “You must have a nice camera,” it’s akin to saying, “You must have good brushes to be a painter.” While quality tools certainly matter, they’re only a small part of the equation. The camera becomes an extension of the photographer’s vision, allowing them to capture moments, emotions, and stories that others might overlook.
In essence, photography is an art form that involves far more than the click of a button. It’s about capturing the world through your unique lens, revealing your creativity, technical expertise, and the stories you wish to tell. So, when I apply to art shows and galleries as a photographer, I hope to convey that photography is not just a craft; it’s an art form that requires a deep connection between the photographer and their subject, as well as a profound ability to translate that connection into a visual masterpiece.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
In essence, being an artist, especially as a photographer, offers the privilege of bridging the gap between the beauty of nature and the human experience. It allows me to facilitate conversations, evoke emotions, and forge connections that celebrate the wonder and significance of the world we inhabit. Through my art, I not only express myself but also become a conduit for others to explore, appreciate, and protect the marvels of our planet.
I love sharing the beauty of nature. One of the most fulfilling experiences as a photographer is the ability to capture and convey the sheer beauty of the natural world. Through my lens, I can immortalize the awe-inspiring landscapes, intricate details, and fleeting moments in nature that might otherwise go unnoticed. This act of sharing allows others to appreciate and connect with the splendor of the world around us.
Through photography I am able to create meaningful conversations and connections. Being an artist opens doors to meaningful conversations with people who share a passion for the visual arts and the environment. Through my work, I have the privilege of engaging in discussions about the nuances of a captivating sunset, the raw energy of a thunderstorm, or the serene power of water. These conversations not only enrich my own understanding but also provide a platform for others to express their perspectives and emotions, creating a sense of shared wonder.
And, one of the most rewarding aspects is fostering a connection with nature, witnessing people make a deep and personal connection with my images. When someone views my photograph and finds themselves transported to the very moment I captured, a powerful connection with nature is formed. It’s as though they are standing beside me, feeling the warmth of the setting sun or the exhilaration of a thunderstorm. This connection can be transformative, inspiring greater appreciation and care for the natural world.
