Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kristen Charlery. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kristen, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
When I think of success I think about finding a passion that you love that loves you back, and I also think you have to be okay with failing. As a creative, I am often challenged by my inability to accept work that is not perfect, or as I have imagined. I’m not sure why I am so strict about how my project looks and feels but they almost don’t seem complete unless they completely match what I originally wanted. This year I decided that I was okay with making bad art, and I was okay with imperfect as long as it got done. My photo project Anderson based on the films of Wes Anderson has helped me do that. I created a timeline for myself and I am happy to announce that I met my own deadline and this in turn increased my confidence. With this Anderson project, I introduce to the world my work, ironically imperfect while it draws themes from perfect symmetry. I think that mentality has helped me push some ideas over the finish line and release my work to the world. More specifically, I mean finding something you care about and are good at.

Kristen, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a creative director/ photographer. I love to come up with ideas for short films, and photo projects and direct the execution. I can hire makeup artists, models, photographers, cinematographers, etc, and have them rally around an idea. I am most proud of my ability to lead others and inspire them to create in their most authentic way.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being a creative for me is watching or reviewing my work before I release it. Its kind of like my baby and I get so proud, I kind of obsess over my work when its done and analyze it in its final state.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One lesson I had to unlearn was comparing my journey to others. If there is one thing I know about life at all it is that life comes from you and not at you. For the most part, you have the power to steer your ship in whichever direction you see fit. When I think about that it inspires me to live my life authentically as an artist, I want to always show the beauty I see in my life to others.
