We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kristen Burdick. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kristen below.
Kristen, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So, let’s imagine that you were advising someone who wanted to start something similar to you and they asked you what you would do differently in the startup-process knowing what you know now. How would you respond?
If I were to start over with KBPhotography, I think the only thing that could have changed my course of path would’ve been choosing to go to a bigger art school. Doing this, I could’ve really put all my time into perfecting my craft of photography and had an atmosphere where I was surrounded by other creatives. I think bouncing ideas off of other creative minds and having more people to work with, including models and even fashion designers, would have definitely helped me get to where I am today a lot faster.
With this being said, I think everything happens for a reason. I chose to go to the University of Mary Hardin Baylor for soccer and I get to enjoy both the sport I love and photography. If I chose the better art school path, I probably would have had to sacrifice the great soccer experience I’ve had at UMHB. I also have grown to really love Belton, TX and have made lots of connections where I’m at. I wouldn’t change the way KBPhotography came to be and is continuing to grow. Experiencing challenges that other art students haven’t had to face has made me a stronger photographer and person in general.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
The main reason I got into photography was because of my dad. He was the photographer in the family and brought his camera almost everywhere. Because of this, I was interested to learn more about taking pictures. I took two photography classes in high school and decided that’s what I wanted to pursue in college.
KBPhotography can supply any of your photo needs, but favors and explores the possibilities of fashion photography. I think what sets my pictures apart from others is the use of non traditional locations/models and exploring the idea of divine timing during my photoshoots. I see every single photoshoot I do as an adventure Being spontaneous in this way, adds to the magic of my pictures. I will do little planning for my photoshoots, and then leave the rest to the universe.
I am most proud of the things I am currently working on for my senior art show in the fall. I am exploring the idea of fashion photography and how fashion can give someone who is wearing it a whole new and different persona.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I wouldn’t say there is a particular goal or mission driving my creative journey but there is just a love to create and take pictures. Compulsion is the best way I can describe it. I have an intense desire to shoot fashion photography. Taking, editing, and sending the finalized pictures gives me a feeling that I can not put into words. I also feel that the spontaneous part of my craft helps add this this feeling.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I think the most rewarding part of being an artist is the client’s initial reaction to the photographs I have taken for them. Getting compliments from normal clients and hearing how models feel when I take pictures of them is what keeps me going. Hearing models say “this is the prettiest I’ve ever felt” or “you make me feel like I can be my true self” gives me the most amazing feeling. It gives me the confirmation that I am doing something right with my craft and it has an effect on others and how they feel about themselves.
