Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kristen Bousquet. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kristen, appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
After officially starting my own content creator journey in 2018, I found that I was getting so many questions about how I was building my business, working with brands, and making enough money for it to be my full-time job. I spent hours and hours in the DMs answering questions until one day I realized that there was clearly a real need for more guidance for creators to learn how to start and scale their businesses. This is when I decided to go all in and start my own company, Soulcialmate. We first started off coaching creators via 1:1 calls and with time, I realized that we needed to shift to more in-depth courses and coaching options.
Kristen, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Originally from Massachusetts, I went to college at FIT in New York. I loved fashion and photography and after college, I moved back home to Mass and started working at Sephora as a part time job while I built my photography business. Eventually, my photography blossomed into an entire company where I did hair, makeup and photography eventually opening up my own full-service salon, spa and photography studio in Massachusetts. After a few years of building that business, I made the very difficult decision to sell my business and go all in on content creation full-time as this is what I was doing as a side gig throughout building my photography business. After being a full-time creator, I eventually transitioned into what my job is today: a creator monetization coach where I coach content creators how to turn their online influence and creativity into a profitable, self-sustaining business.
Conversations about M&A are often focused on multibillion dollar transactions – but M&A can be an important part of a small or medium business owner’s journey. We’d love to hear about your experience with selling businesses.
I was in a partnership with a friend and after about four years of building, I realized that she was not the right partner for me and this business was no longer my passion. I made the difficult decision to sell that business. I met with a financial coach who was able to guide me through figuring out the exact value of all of our assets and income. We came up with a number that I’d ask my ex-partner for in order to buy my share of the business. We sat down, and I had the difficult conversation with her that I’d be leaving, and I presented her with an option to buy my share. She agreed, we sat down with an attorney a couple weeks later, and signed the business over to her.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Most avenues of social media are incredibly oversaturated. What is the one thing that can help you stand out? It’s you. You are the secret sauce. It’s incredibly important that no matter what type of business you have, you’re not afraid to get personal and share you, your personality, and your life with your audience. You can build an incredibly loyal audience this way. They’ll tell their friends, who will tell their friends, etc. Loyalty is the way to win at business, and people can’t be loyal to you if they don’t know you.
