We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kristell Hurtado a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kristell, appreciate you joining us today. Covid has brought about so many changes – has your business model changed?
Before the pandemic, I had my sights set on a career in a consumer industry. As a Brand Manager for a French Baked Goods Company, life was comfortable but unfulfilling.
When Covid hit, I quit my job and joined Wander PR as a freelancer, venturing into a whole new world. I created the Social Media and Digital Marketing department, and this journey led me to meet remarkable people.
I was soon asked to be the Marketing Director at the Coconut Grove Business Improvement District. Today, I manage work at Wander PR and contribute to the Coconut Grove community, creating business programs, promoting sustainability, supporting local businesses, handling digital marketing, and organizing events. My career has taken an unexpected and fulfilling turn.

Kristell, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I began my professional journey studying Communications in Venezuela and later pursued a master’s in Marketing. For over 16 years, I’ve been deeply immersed in the Consumer Goods Sector.
However, life took an exciting turn when I got married and became a parent. My family and I decided to seek fresh opportunities, leading us to Miami. In the United States, I embarked on a new chapter, starting from scratch as a Channel Manager in an American Pay TV entertainment company that catered to the U.S. Hispanic market. But that wasn’t the end of my journey.
A fantastic opportunity presented itself when I joined a French Baked Goods Company, continuing my career in the field of Marketing. Throughout my professional life, I’ve always held a passion for being creative, innovative, sociable, and curious. While I loved my job, I yearned for a more challenging endeavor, so I took the plunge and became an entrepreneur, offering my expertise in Digital Marketing.
This was the turning point that unveiled my newfound passion. I aspired to help small businesses thrive in the dynamic world of Social Media and Digital Marketing. Thus, I became a collaborator in a PR Agency, a unique collective of PR professionals. Amid this talented group, I was the sole marketer tasked with managing PR Social Media for clients from a range of industries, including hospitality, restaurants, and fashion.
As my mission to support small businesses to reach new heights gained momentum, I joined the Coconut Grove Business Improvement District as a Digital Marketing Consultant. Later, I proudly assumed the role of Marketing Director. In this capacity, I’ve been able to flourish as a professional while simultaneously making a profound impact on over 20 clients as an entrepreneur. I’ve supported the Coconut Grove Business Community by implementing innovative programs that help them promote their businesses through our Social Media Channels, Newsletters, Website, Events, and Community Programs.
My commitment to assisting small businesses in their quest for success is stronger than ever. Managing my professional and personal life with success has allowed me to make a difference. Every day, I ask myself how I can enhance my work and make my clients happier through novel strategies.
I consider myself incredibly fortunate because my clients believe in my potential and encourage me to explore possibilities I had never imagined before. This journey is a testament to the power of pursuing one’s passion and making a meaningful impact in the world of business.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Consistency!
Being consistent isn’t always a walk in the park. It’s a journey where you often find your own mind acting as a saboteur, challenging your efforts. But, if you’re determined to succeed, being consistent and authentic is the key.
My journey also taught me the art of creating killer presentations for our services and the skill of pitching effectively. Understanding the needs of potential clients, scanning them, identifying their problems, and providing solutions are essential steps in the process. I’ve always been results-driven, so I thrive on sharing the progress of our new strategies.
Most of my clients have come to me through recommendations. I take great pride in the fact that I’ve never let them down. I’ve become an integral part of their team, living and breathing their brands. As time passes, I’ve transformed into not just a service provider but a devoted fan.
This feeling of pride and accomplishment is what keeps me motivated in my job.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My creative journey is fueled by the mission of helping small businesses stand out in the market. It’s about making them relevant and giving their customers a unique experience, regardless of the industry they belong to. I firmly believe that in today’s fiercely competitive market, experiential marketing is the key to becoming truly remarkable.
My journey is all about crafting new strategies, weaving captivating stories that connect my clients with fresh audiences. It’s a mission that revolves around cultivating loyalty and fostering customer preference. I strive to make every interaction with my clients’ brands an unforgettable and valuable experience. It’s not just about marketing; it’s about leaving an indelible mark in the hearts of customers, making them feel truly special.
It’s about changing “being top of mind” to “being top of heart”.
