We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kristel Tariman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Kristel, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?

Let’s start at the beginning, shall we? Before Sunbask Studios, there was Curate with Kristel. I founded Curate with Kristel in 2020 at the height of the pandemic. It began as a side hustle while I worked full-time as a technical account manager at a multinational tech company. Like many others, I had ample time on my hands working from home, which prompted me to ask myself what I truly wanted to do with my life. I wasn’t content with my job at the tech company anymore. I knew there was something better out there for me. I always wanted to become an entrepreneur and help people with my skills. I scoured the vast internet for ideas and stumbled upon freelancing, and I knew I had to give it a try.

Within a week or two of launching my brand, I secured client projects. Something inside me ignited, and I knew this was what I wanted to do. I relished the opportunity to showcase my creativity and assist others in building their dream businesses. Fast forward to 2022: after two years in the industry, I recognized that I needed to level up, and my current brand no longer suited me. That’s when I decided to revamp my brand, and Sunbask Studios was born. I understood that I was destined for greater things, and transitioning to a studio could help me realize my vision.

For me, Sunbask means basking in a golden light. I want to capture the feeling of basking in the sun during sunrise and sunset when the sun looks magnificent. The feeling of watching the sunrise/sunset is soothing, timeless, and regal. Every single day, the sun takes center stage during these golden hours, and every single day, without fail, it shows up. It appears on the brightest and darkest of days.

As a brand, I want our studio to be a haven where businesses can bask in their own golden hour. I want them to feel confident and assured that we will be there for them, providing them with the best possible experience. It’s about putting their businesses in the spotlight, where people will be drawn to them, much like the way people are drawn to the sunset.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?

One of my personal goals is to achieve both financial and time freedom, while also making a positive impact on the lives of others. This goal drives me and is what motivates me to excel in my role as a brand designer and strategist. Through my work, I am able to help power up people’s dreams and assist them in achieving their goals. I strongly believe that everyone deserves to live their best life, and as a positive contributor, I strive to help others achieve that.

To me, being a positive contributor can take many forms. It can mean working closely with clients to create impactful designs that help their businesses grow and thrive. It can also mean sharing my knowledge and expertise with the community, through mentoring, workshops or lectures. I believe that by giving back in this way, I can help inspire and empower others to reach their full potential. Ultimately, I see myself as a catalyst for positive change, helping others to achieve their goals and live their best lives.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?

As a creative, I find it incredibly rewarding to witness the confidence and excitement my clients display when they see their branding come to life. It is a realization of their dreams and it fills me with pride to be able to bring their visions to fruition and assist them in this way.

From the outset, I wondered if I had the necessary skills to succeed, but the positive impact my work has on people’s lives motivates me to continue. Collaborating with clients and learning about their businesses and objectives is a truly gratifying experience. It not only provides me with fresh insights and perspectives, but it also challenges me creatively. I am constantly pushing myself to stay up-to-date with the latest trends and techniques in my field, which not only enables me to deliver high-quality work but also inspires me to stay motivated and inspired.
