We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kristal Sims a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kristal , appreciate you joining us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
Being a business owner has its good days & bad days. However, this is the route that I chose. This is how I provide for my family. So no matter what, I have to keep going.
I’m happier owning a business versus working on a job. Sometimes when business is slow, I tell myself that I will go get a job and then reality sets in. If I go work a job, I’m working extremely hard for someone else. I can put that energy into my business.
So as you know, we’re going through a recession right now. Which means, a lot of my fellow service providers are experiencing little to no appointments. So yes, it can get depressing. I told my husband that I was going to get a job. He looked at me and said, “are you crazy?”. “You make more money than some nurses.”
So I started promoting my business more and praying more and that’s when the business picked up.
Sometimes, we all need a little push & support. I love my clients & I’m thankful for them and my business.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m a Makeup Artist. I have two studio’s. One in Orlando, Fl and the other in Sebring, Fl. I’ve been in the industry for over 15 years.
I specialize in Natural/Soft glam makeup.
My goal is to make women feel beautiful inside as well as outside.
When you book with me, you get an experience. You’re getting motivated, encouragement and an overall great time. I’m not just in it for the money.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn that I can’t do everything alone. You need a team. You need help. Although I’m confident that I can do a bridal party of 15 by myself, why work harder when you can work smarter. This allows me to take on more appointments that same day.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When someone from Teen Vogue reached out to me about doing makeup. I was so excited but nervous. I actually thought it was a prank at first. I was just recovering from Covid when I received the email. Once they sent the call sheet, I knew it was official.
After that, my career has been moving so fast.
