We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Krista Nykol a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Krista, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you wish you had started sooner?
I grew up in a household where the performing arts were an important creative outlet, in my family you had to pick up one instrument. I choose the cello and played it for 8 years, my real true passion was always Acting. I had no idea until I started going to a performing arts elementary school, I then performed at my local church, and my Mom bought me some private lessons and allowed me to squander every opportunity to be on stage. I started Auditioning for plays very young and kept moving upward and onward. Yet my confidence level was nowhere near what it should have been for someone with my “natural talent” from what I’ve always heard. I feel as though I had enough experience as a child to be in a better position far sooner. Yet I thought I had to go down a straight and narrow path to get to my career, and do 4 years of college in a high-paying profession to have enough credibility and financial structure to be able to hold down a good 9-5 while also following my passion. However, it forced me to face the truth. That if this is something I feel truly passionate about and called towards, I should take any and every opportunity to chase my dreams and make them a reality. Although I wish I had started my career in my adolescence I know now that I had to go through all these lessons to find my reason for being happy. I’m glad I had the time to find whom I am first before pretending to be any character I put my mind to.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a Film Actress, I have worked on set and behind the scenes however, I am best in front of the camera. I am a natural-born actress with a multitude of classes and training on my resume. I work very well with criticism and guidance I hope to learn on the job with more opportunities. I am also a self-proclaimed Stylist and fashion designer, my goal is to make sure that Art represents the Artist and that Art speaks for itself. I am most proud of the Artists’ outcome, whether it be on a big screen, on the runway, or on a website. When everyone is satisfied with the work that was put into the Art, it takes the effort of everyone in the entertainment industry to create a masterpiece and I am always proud to be a part of the team.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is to lead by example, I am always going to be confident and forthcoming with all of my accomplishments. I will never sell myself short or settle for less than what I believe I deserve and those are the traits I want other people to have as well. I want little girls to see me on screen and know that I am a person that is accepted and loved because I am comfortable shining and being myself. I don’t want anyone to think that they need to make themselves more digestible for people to accept them, my driving goal and mission is to be a role model to people that never felt like they could speak up, or chase their dreams. I believe that by allowing myself to obtain my goal of becoming a very successful film actress I will inspire other people to find their calling and be a beckon of light to those around them.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Sometimes it’s very easy to get caught up in doing things for other people, gaining validation from the persona that you are emulating is going to put you in a place you do not want to be in. you continuously are cultivating an idea of yourself that you know you can’t uphold and that is going to hurt you in the end. It might sound overrated but being yourself and staying true to your personality and your own opinions is what’s going to set you apart from other people. That’s what’s going to make you stand out, the fact that you are a unique individual outside of all these other people is what is going to make people want to know more about you. Also, growth is a part of life. If you feel as though people aren’t going to live whom you have grown to be, then those aren’t the people you need around you. human beings evolve and although most of us do not like change is it inevitable. Staying true to who you are should never change, that’s what is going to make people love you.
