We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Krista Grevas. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Krista below.
Hi Krista, thanks for joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I was very privileged and thankful to be supported artistically by my parents very young. So truthfully there was only ever really the understanding to me that I’d go into the arts one way or another. I made the decision pretty quickly in highschool to go to college for theatre. But I wouldn’t say my true career where I started getting paid to be an artist wasn’t until after grad school circa 2019/2020. So it feels like I had to start late because or the pandemic but really everything was right on time. The only thing I wish I had done in college and grad school is auditioning virtually more or writing more, even taking more costuming classes. I think I’ll always wish to know more about my elective fields of arts. I am a big believer of everything happens for a reason. I think the only thing that might have jump started me was moving to nyc sooner, I moved here in 2021. But at the time and how things panned out I believe it was the right decision.

Krista, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi I’m Krista Grevas and basically I’m an arts kid that grew up and refused to leave neverland. I was a competitive dancer from the age of 12, this transitioned into musicals, into acting, into writing, into costumes because I was so enamored that costumes could make a performance better. Through a long series of events when moving home to finish out grad school virtually for the pandemic I started working at a local theatre as wardrobe and crew. I got into writing from grad school as that was really encouraged as an actor to find your voice and the stories you wanna tell and be a part of. When I moved to NYC in 2021 I was lucky enough to be connected with New Light Theatre Project through Beth Links as she was a past professor of mine. And they gave me the opportunity to be an understudy and wardrobe supervisor for a show. And from there I realized I could really make a career out of wardrobe and dressing and I was really good at it and I loved that it was my day job. I’ve also worked as a stitcher privately and for corporations as sewing is a skill that gets lost sometimes I feel. Since 2021 I’ve wardrobe supervised multiple shows with New Light and other smaller theatre companies, even designed a few myself. I’ve been a stitcher and PA for RWS Global, I’ve been an assistant to other costume designers such as Nicki Moody at Bucks County Playhouse. I’m most proud most that I never chose a lane. I still try to do a little bit of everything in theatre I love.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
It feels like a harp to say but funding. But to me this starts at the local level meaning people going to school performances and community theatre. If you are traveling prioritizing seeing the local art and performing arts in that area.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
The thing that will I think always be a standard is making connections and relationships with people you work with. Supporting eachother. Being nice to each other, there’s a lot of talented people in this world, but to be talented and nice , someone people want to work with because you respect everyone in the room for the differences they bring to better a piece.
