We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Krissy Taylor a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Krissy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We love asking folks what they would do differently if they were starting today – how they would speed up the process, etc. We’d love to hear how you would set everything up if you were to start from step 1 today.
If I was to start my photography business over, the biggest thing I would change is I would start it sooner. I had the idea for two years before I took the leap and purchased a camera. In the beginning it was a big learning curve between learning how to use a camera, lighting, and posing. To start I took one photography class and from there picked up a camera and went to work. It has been an incredible past two years.
What I would tell myself two years ago, knowing what I know now, is reach out and network and have confidence. Networking and supporting other businesses has made such an immense impact on my career and last led to some amazing friendships. Also having the confidence and believing in yourself. It is scary to start something new and starting out your skill level may not be where you want it to be, but believing in yourself and pushing your limits outside your comfort zone can bring out the most beautiful changes in your career and in yourself.

Krissy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi, my name is Krissy and I am a photographer in Tucson, Arizona. I had the desire to start a photography business for a few years and in November 2021 took the leap and started Krissy Taylor Photography. I had been in corporate for many years and then a stay at home mom for a long time and was looking for a creative outlet. When the idea first came to me I wanted to niche more into boudoir, but as I started working and doing more and more photoshoots I found my passion was in branding photography and couples photography (which also did include some of my original idea of boudoir). At the heart of my business it is about helping people capture memories. Photos tell a story that lives on forever and provides the ability to tell the story of your life or your business.
For branding photography I love helping bring a businesses’ vision and brand to life. This begins with an in person consult so I can get a clear picture of their vision and we work together to bring life to that vision. It is not only a photoshoot but we work together to also create content on the day of the photoshoot. We live in a world where it is now expected of a business to have a social media presence and if you have your company or business partner with you for that day, you might as well capitalize on the time and not only get a branding photoshoot but also video and behind the scenes. From there we will also talk social media strategy if desired. With owning your own business, you learn a wide variety of skills that compliment your job. Such as videography, social media, expert editing, networking, etc.
I also really enjoy couples photoshoots, my most favorite being elopement’s. This is a time for the couple to connect and capture intimate memories for themselves and that moment in time. These sessions are fun, playful and full of love.
Family photography is another offering I have. It is always so wonderful to see families back year after year to capture memories. With my family sessions I capture moments in a story telling way vs. posed portraits. This gives kids the ability to be kids, and play and show their true selves. When capturing moments this way it is real and authentic and provides genuine smiles and laughter.
I do take on a select number of weddings each year too.
I am most proud of my branding work and helping businesses grow. Seeing someone else succeed and share their business and vision makes me so happy.
The main thing I would want potential client to know is that I truly enjoy capturing memories for people and getting to know clients. By the end of each session we are always joking and laughing. I strive to do this through story telling so it is authentic to you, not just standing there being posed. Also, while I am located in Tucson I love to travel for work.

How did you build your audience on social media?
Building your audience on social media is tough, there is no other way to put it. The best advice I can give is be authentic and collaborate.
There are a few businesses and other photographers in town I have collaborated on projects with and that helped. It was also a great way to meet other business owners. Where I live I am very fortunate that it is community over competition and people supporting others. We share each others wins and businesses or I will refer over to someone else if needed.
Also being authentic. I share things that resonate with me or share some snippets of my personal life in stories. It helps clients get to know you before working with you.
If you are a creative, you can also look for engagement groups to join.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Photography is a form of art, which is why it is wonderful there are so many photographers, that way each client finds a style they are drawn to.
The most rewarding element for me is happy clients; clients that love the way I captured memories for them and send me photos of their photos hanging on the walls in their home. Or seeing my photos on a businesses website or social media. That is the goal and the reason behind doing what I do.
