Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Krisan Harrison. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Krisan , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
Taking a risk for me was twofold. The first big risk I took was leaving my country of Jamaica to come to college here in the States. I got my BSc in Biology and a minor in Psychology. I followed a very traditional path. That is, getting a degree, then getting a job, I wasn’t fulfilled. I had always been curious about skincare. In particular my skin. So having a science background I wanted to delve deeper into how to treat my skin. So like any rational person. I enrolled in an accelerated esthetics program which was full time while having a full time job. Let’s just say, I would not recommend, zero stars. I did however manage to juggle both and graduated in 4 months. Even after getting licensed I was still a bit hesitant to jump in the skincare world with both feet, so I only did it part time. My next big risk came in 2018 when I decided to open my business. Not having a business background or a clue as to how to run one. My early years in business were basically on the job training by trial and many errors. To look back at the process, while not easy. It has taught me so much. I’m still a young business, so I’m constantly learning and trying to evolve as the industry does. As time goes on I look forward to seeing what other risks and rewards the future holds.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a licensed esthetician who lives in NC. I have a background in science. I have BSc in Biology and graduated from a HBCU Livingstone College in Salisbury NC. I also graduated from The Aveda Institute in Chapel Hill NC where I got esthetics certification. I got into this industry out of curiosity about my skincare issues and I’ve loved it ever since. My areas of focus are hair removal. Also preventative and corrective treatments with a holistic approach. Concentrating on anti aging and pigmentation concerns. I not only treat the visible skin but treat from the inside out. This is achieved through customized skincare treatments and home care. What sets me apart from other estheticians is my ability to educate my clients in a way that’s relatable and easily understood. My client’s and I are partners in the journey. I’m most proud of knowing that my client’s are always satisfied. They become like family over time and that’s the best thing that could happen. Real relationships and real results.
Do you have any stories of times when you almost missed payroll or any other near death experiences for your business?
A near death moment for the business came in 2020 when covid happened. The business wasn’t even 2 years old and the world came to a standstill. With that being said, getting skincare treatments was not considered a necessity. Business was slow and bills were still due. So I had to get creative. Instead of wallowing in self pity I got a job and another stream of income to help keep the business afloat during a super slow period. I did house calls as well as limited in office visits until things started looking up and client’s were coming on a regular basis. It was my faith in God and my will to persevere that got me through that uncertain time.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Being my authentic self has helped build my reputation in the market. At my core I treat everyone of my client’s with the same level of respect no matter the race, color, or socioeconomic background. I provide a safe, comfortable and no judgment environment. My client’s love that they can just be themselves around me and the 5 star customer service isn’t bad either.
