We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kris Pritchard a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kris thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
Starting my own business has taught me some very important lessons in a very short amount time. Start small. Build clientele. I started in a small office as a single provider. It takes time. Over the past 4 years I have come to understand precisely what the term “drinking from a fire hose” means. As a nurse practitioner with no business training or experience in opening, running or growing a business, the learning curve was intense to say the least. Pay attention to the mistakes. They will happen. You will learn from them.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a nurse practitioner. My background is in emergency medicine. I became interested in aesthetic medicine because of the unique way it combines the science of medicine with the art of beauty. I also want to disrupt the notion that aging means giving up on yourself. I was 48 years old when I left my job and started my own business. I believe taking a proactive approach to aging improves more than just our appearance. It improves the way we feel about aging. And that’s huge! I love working with my patients to help them look great and most importantly, to feel more confident and live their best life.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Be willing to make mistakes and be willing to learn from them. But be a quick learner. Don’t make the same mistakes over and over.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Put out small fires frequently. Don’t wait until they become big fires. Put the right people in the right positions. It’s a disservice to keep someone in a job they aren’t suited for just because you like them. They will be better off and so will your business and your staff. Give your team the excellent leadership they deserve from you.
