We recently connected with Kris Corbett and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kris, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
Fit 4 Adventure is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year! I am celebrating my 5th year as one of the owners of the company. If you do the math, then yes, that means I bought a travel company in the middle of a pandemic. That is correct, in the middle of uncertainty around what the travel industry would be, I made the biggest career move of my life! Prior to this, I spent most of my working career in the golf industry. I was a professional golf caddie, a rules official, and a tour director for a men’s professional golf tour. All of that experience with travel, logistics, and customer service set me up well for the switch! I absolutely love being a business owner, and more importantly, I love traveling with clients to amazing places. It’s the best risk I have ever taken.

Kris, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
We are an active vacation company taking trips both foreign and domestic, offering a variety of activities, including hiking, cycling, yoga, multi-sport, rafting, and running. These are guided vacations to beautiful destinations, where we take care of all of the planning! The company started in 2000 as Golden Adventures with a name change to Fit 4 Adventure in 2014. The original owner retired in 2020, and I had the opportunity to take over with my business partner Nick. We are a small company with a handful of amazing guides that work for us. We strive to make memorable vacations for our clients, whom we consider family.

Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
Hoping to become a guide for Fit 4 Adventure in 2019, I reached out to the owner asking if there were any positions available. At the time, she had just hired a couple of guides and did not have any openings. But, a couple of weeks later, I got a call that one of the new guides took another job opportunity and there was now an open position. She said, “Can you come on a staff retreat next week in Colorado?” I immediately said, “Of course!” and booked a last minute flight. Upon arrival in Denver, I was told to meet Joe and Nick in the baggage area. I stood in the baggage area looking for two guys that might be going on a hut trip (but everyone in the Denver airport has that vibe). Two guys walked up and said, “You must be Kris?” A year later, Joe, Nick, and I went into business together to take over Fit 4 Adventure. While Joe has since retired, Nick and I remain business partners today.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
This is the easiest question to answer… Hands down, no thought involved, our best source of new clients is word-of-mouth promotion from our past clients. We love hearing, “Our friends went on your Croatia trip and had the best time,” or “My friend loved traveling with you and recommended your company!” Or, my favorite is when a return client books a trip and then gets their friends to sign up for the trip with them. Then it is a party.
