We were lucky to catch up with Kris Butcher recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kris , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of our favorite things to hear about is stories around the nicest thing someone has done for someone else – what’s the nicest thing someone has ever done for you?
The kindest thing anyone has ever done for me is allow me the freedom to explore and to express myself. I’ve always had a very supportive and encouraging family. I don’t know where I’d be or what I’d be doing without being surrounded by people who have always encouraged me to prioritize my creativity. Lucky me.

Kris , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
The titles I’m most aligned with are songwriter and musician. However as a self proclaimed creative I wear a lot of hats. Some days I’m accountant, some days I’m session guitarist, some days I’m booking agent… you get the picture. I think what I do best is be myself. I’m pretty comfortable in my own skin, and I feel pretty confident that I’ve developed a voice and sound of my own. I’m most proud of the work I’ve done with my band Kilo Bravo.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The goal that motivates me most is to just create and enjoy creating above all else. I’m always looking for a new song to sing. There’s a joy in getting lost in the act of creating that is unrivaled. It’s this magic moment where time evaporates and everything is right in the world. That’s what drives me. To enjoy my life to the best of my ability.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
This is a tough question. I feel like we’re living in an era where consumers are being groomed for a future run by A.I. including artificial art and artificial music. Creative works are generally criminally under valued. You know I play and create music. It’s no secret that streaming services like Spotify pay fractions of a cent per stream. A lot of music venues either have ticket sale minimum’s for artists to meet, or are taking large cuts from sales of both tickets and merch. Meanwhile not a single venue on this planet is willing to split bar sales. So when asked what can society do to best support artists, I’d start with society needs to respect and value artists. Creatives are stubborn, we are going to create no matter what. Unfortunately our love for craft has been exploited by corporate greed. However creatives are also resilient and art lives forever. The best way I know to support a creative ecosystem is to support each other, collaborate with your peers, build a small devoted community rather than try to take on the world.
