We caught up with the brilliant and insightful KPMADMAN a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
KPMADMAN, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Taking a risk to be oppositional to everything that’s pushed in our faces. Once you learn the depth of where it all goes, it’s not worth having for any reason outside of the fact that they want you to have it and they want you to have all of it. all the time. Content is a great example. Went from not having social media in the early 00’s to now having it in our faces at all times. Some kids grow up with content in their faces and they don’t even know what it means but somehow we all grew up knowing what the fucking Geico Geeko looks like. Not knowing anything about what’s around us and who’s around us.
Take a risk to step away from it, for whatever reason. If you’re not aiming to step away, discover what it truly means to give your time and energy to something you may not fully understand. Once you figure out all the dirty little secrets of how these things came to exist, then it’s not so shiny anymore.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m going to start building Furniture this year. Starting a whole new venture that I want to align with all of my other Artistic endeavors. Building community is what all of my work is about and I believe in building a home(s) for community. KPMADMAN was the start and the foundation, everything else that follows suit is going to be something that’s adding to the home.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
The current currency is failing so they create a new one. A new one to most that’s inaccessible because the first one was inaccessible. The current cycle repeating itself. JPMorgan&Chase becomes Cash App. Ronald Reagan becomes Donald Trump. Facebook becomes Meta. Twitter becomes X. It’s this weird cycle of things that happen but happen to repeat themselves in how they’re represented and the values they’ve always held close. It’s boring and dangerous but people will respond to those things because they’re being pushed in our faces at an alarming rate especially during election years. Almost like NFTs just fell from the sky and landed in our laps.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I’ve found myself to become an Artist in Tucson, Arizona. Arizona is one of the states with the lowest education spending, next to Mississippi, and one with the lowest Arts & Culture funding in the entire United States so there isn’t much to be desired in terms of Arts and Culture in Tucson except what’s in the barrios. From the simplest places, I’ve found inspiration due to the overarching spaces not incubating much. Blue Lotus has been an inspiration because it’s new and it has different perspectives comparatively to most. S/O Laura Pendleton-Miller.
All that to say, don’t fund the Arts into a budget of nothingness. It doesn’t do anything and it doesn’t help anyone appreciate the Arts in life. Bring life to the Arts, in whatever form you can. From those that can’t afford it to those who can and hopefully we’ll all meet somewhere beautiful in the middle.
