We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kovaski Jones a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kovaski, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I used to watch my cousin take photos and I thought that taking photos may be a cool thing to try. One day, I purchased a starter camera, nothing too expensive, just to learn how to take photos and to see if this was something I actually enjoy. On the same day I purchased it, I went out to The Battery before a Braves game and just randomly took photos of people. They were posing and asking for pics like I was a vet. They were asking for my info to see the finished product. I had my cousin with me to guide me and he said to me, “for some reason, you are attracting people toward you”. I sat back and realized he was right, people flowed to me and my camera. I didn’t know what I wanted to do with photography, then I was approached to shoot a wedding for a family member because the original photographer backed out. I took the gig and once I shared a few photos, I took off. Still with my starter camera, I took great pics. I know then that I wanted to stick with wedding photography. I have done close to 100 weddings already, with more lined up. I don’t just limit myself to weddings but that is my main focus.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Kovaski Jones of Vision Photos LLC. I photograph a lot of wedding, engagement sessions, parties, events, corporate events, and more. I travel a lot for weddings and other events. I have been all over the states, my work has, fortunately, done good enough that my name has gotten around.
I am defiantly proud of how far I have come and the business that I get. I love to see my work being hung up in a home, posted online, or just simply having great reviews. I get clients that have a vision of what they want and I help them achieve that vision. I am always about the client. I interact heavily and make sure your experience with me is fun and memorable.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I think promoting myself has been very helpful in growing my clientele. I have paid for ads on social media, I have done photo shoots for little to no money, knowing the the exposure will gain a new client or two. I think marketing yourself by paid ads, doing great work to where others mention you or shout you out, and even something simple as a shirt with my business info has helped. I always make sure to have Kvisions name somewhere for you to see.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Whew, funding my business/buying equipment has been the one thing that takes it out of you. I funded my business on my own from the work that I have done. I have simply upgraded my equipment over time, slowly, to where I have enough to make sure I am doing great work. I am still looking to upgrade my equipment now, and will never stop, but I definitely have to pace myself, photography is not cheap at all.
