Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kosta Vasiliou. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kosta, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I believe every project is meaningful. Even if it is a failure or unfinished, it carries some lesson that can be taken into your next project. Growth is always valuable.
Kosta, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a Los Angeles based music producer working under the alias Shadesails. Since 2010, I have explored deeply personal soundscapes not only inspired by the old world folk music of his Greek, Colombian, and Spanish background, but also my vast love for cutting edge electronic music and experimental art in various mediums. I have released many projects that utilize field recordings, found sound samples, live instrumentation, with each project having its own themes and cinematic qualities. My newest album “El Viajero” is a sonic voyage aimed to draw in listeners with a traveler’s heart. I am also one half of the retro futuristic electronic pop duo Bommy Tahama with Jules Ramirez. Our debut album “Latigo Beach”, along with their instrumental EP “Vermilion Sun”, are out now.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I would say overall I have no goal in my creative journey other than following my intuition. In life there is a lot of games that people playin order to get ahead or to achieve their goals, but sometimes goals need to change as we change. I have a deep passion for music, I listen to it everyday and have an unquenchable thirst to discover new sounds. Through this constant research, I end up creating as a run-off based on being inspired or having idle hands. I would say overall my creative journey is more of a compulsion than a clear cut mission. I hope at the end of my life that the sounds and art that I make can looked at as an expression of my true self, and hopefully make even just one person feel a tiny morsel of what I feel from all of the artists through the annuls have time have made me feel.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The creative process is a reward in and of itself. It includes input (taking in information), and output (making art). The cycle continues as the artist moves through life, and if they work hard at it they will create art that is closer and closer to their true selves. So I guess the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is an outlet to work at discovering your true self. Also, I find making art very therapeutic, and it is really the only thing in life that I feel makes sense. It is the one aspect of life that we can truly have our masks off and not live in a facade.
