We recently connected with Korina Oswald and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Korina, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on is a community project I organized with 170 stained glass artists from around the world. Shifting my artistic journey from shop drops/ markets and batch creating really help bring a joy back into my work and made me want to continue working with glass.
Korina, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Currently my artistic practice is focused on community-based projects like the glass quilt, that involve artists from around the world. Leading community projects were first conceived in the aftermath of COVID’s isolation as a way to connect with glass artists who felt othered by the elitism of the fine art world. Much like quilt-making, glass has long been relegated to “craft” and its artistry has been almost completely absent from prestigious institutions. Oswald seeks to broaden the conversation of what constitutes fine art by creating a piece so large that it cannot be ignored.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My mission in doing community projects are to unite glass artists and create a strong sense of community where we can learn from each other and keep this trade alive. My hope in doing these projects is to show the world that Stained Glass is alive in new ways, with 1,000s of artists around the world creating in their own unique style.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
There might not be a phsyical place in your community to learn stained glass but there are many artists creating through patreon, their online courses and social media willing a ready to help you learn! I would love to be able to create a database of everywhere you can take a class and who in your area can help mentor you on your journey to learning stained glass!
