Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kori Hintz-Bohn. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Kori thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
The first 15 years of my career as a licensed counselor I worked with eating disorders and the treatment modality CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy). In 2014 I was introduced to ACT, otherwise known Acceptance Commitment Therapy. The more I learned it, applied it, taught it, the more change I saw in clients, lasting change. My path shifted from being an eating disorder specialist to a journey of becoming on ACT expert. I traveled across the nation to the founders of ACT to learn under their teaching. I meet weekly for 2 years with a clinician and read book after book applying ACT in our lives and with clients. And I felt called to broaden the speciality to an underserved population of anxiety, OCD, and phobias.
What do i like so much about ACT? It acknowledges suffering in the world. All of us are impacted by suffering. Whether it be the suffering we see in others or endure ourselves, it is inivible to be human and to not be impacted by suffering. ACT helps you identify your values and move forward to living a meaningful life in spite of suffering. Now that is the kind of life I want to help others to live!
Anxiety disorders are the number one mental illness in the US. It has increased since COVID to now being 19% of the adult population will have a anxiety related diagnosis. Yes, only 36.9% receive treatment. (Source: https://adaa.org/understanding-anxiety/facts-statistics). In August 2017 Renew Counseling Center, my company launched The Anxiety Center at Renew. We wanted to be a resource for those that once a week counseling was not enough. A year later my husband who loves working with adolescents and their families launch an adolescent program for anxiety and depression. We have found that in just 6 weeks one can learn significant tools, apply them and see a reduction in anxiety that would usually take years to learn.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I had the privilege of opening Renew Counseling Center in 2005. Renew offers a variety of clinicians that specialize in mood disorders, anxiety, eating disorders, marriage issues, trauma and more. You can go to renewkc.com and check out bios of our amazing therapists! We also offers reduced fee interns as we do not want to finances to be a reason one does not come to counseling.
In 2017 we expanded and launched The Anxiety Center, offering a second level of care for those that once a week counseling is not enough. The Anxiety Center provides an Intensive Outpatient Program for adults and adolescents who suffering from anxiety, depression and other related illnesses. These programs are in a group format meeting 3-4x a week for 5-6 weeks, covered by most insurance companies and are effective in helping individuals find last relief of their symptoms.
Just this year we added a second location in Lawrence, KS. We see a need for this kind of care in that area and want to help.
What makes us unique? We put the client first using the latest treatment modalities. We make individual treatment plans that include the client’s goals. We strive for excellence as we help both inspire and restore clients to wholeness. It’s time to get your life back!
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
Renew was 4-years-old when I met Jason. We fell in love and married in 2010. When I met him he worked for the Federal Government trying to change the system on a national level that was over Child Welfare. Before that he has been a youth pastor and before that a counselor. In 2018 Jason felt called to go back to seeing the faces of those he was trying to help, to give tools to families and adolescents for young people that struggled going to school, getting through a day with his suicidal ideation and that just did not feel hope.
I never imagined when I married this man that we would one day be business partners! But what a joy it’s been to get to now help not only adults in an IOP setting but adolescents and their families as well!
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
I would stay in this profession even if I had to do it again. I feel called to be a therapist and felt that calling in college. I see a client who is struggling and what I see is HOPE. I see all this potential, all those good in them that they have not yet seen. I truly feel honored to walk along side someone suffering and be a part of their healing process.
