Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kook Music. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kook, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I knew that I wanted to be a creator of any sort when I joined an art class with my teacher Mr. Wright. That class had a huge impact on me. He taught me so much about how to unlock your creative self and ever since I took that class I knew that I wanted to create something as well. The main thing I learned in that class was that to be creative is to fully release yourself and be as ridiculous and explorative as possible and I have done that as much as possible.
Kook, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I became very inspired at around 15 years old by music. I had been hearing music all my life and knew how much I loved it but something clicked around that age and i realized that I could make that stuff that I love so much. I love making punk/grunge music which is my main project but I also make folk, metal, indie, and all sorts of genres of music. I think what sets my music apart from others is I write catchy stuff, the type of stuff that gets stuck in your head. I don’t do it on purpose I am just not that smart and so I end up repeating myself. I also can’t decipher complicated melodies or songs so I write usually 4 chords and verse chorus stuff. The project I am most proud of is our album coming January 31st 2025 called “hit the lights”. the thing that I prioritize is making music, and that will always be the thing that I prioritize, I don’t care for the money or the popularity or anything along those lines. I just like making music and playing shows.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think that society as a whole needs a whole revamp, people need to stop being so judgement. I think that something society needs to learn is how to let everyone else live their lives.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Yes, I wish I knew earlier that pain is the way to grow. Until I was around 17 I thought that pain was unnecessary and should be pushed away and not felt. I later realized that pain is the greatest thing we can ask for. Pain is the best way to grow, when we have pain we get to take that and try and learn as much as we can from it. Without pain or mistakes how could we ever learn? It’s like biting your tongue when you’re young. You eventually learn that you shouldn’t do that because it hurts. Mistakes are what make most of my music, I will be playing a song and mess it up and go wait that sounds good. Then I will turn that into a song.
