We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Konnar Allgire a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Konnar, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Realistically I want to be able to create a fun, safe and inclusive environment for creatives of all types and mediums. I want to focus on a community that barters and supports, a community that lifts each-other up, teaches each-other. I want to be able to grow with my peers and I think a lot of people are afraid of branching out, or working within a community and I just want to show people that not everything always has to be a competition, that it’s okay to talk about ideas with people, to try new techniques. There’s so much creativity out there and I’m ready to dig into it!
Konnar, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Born and raised in Saint Louis, Missouri, I have been practicing photography for roughly 10 years now. I purchased my first camera at the age of 15 and the rest was history. My primary area of focus is portraiture, with an emphasis on fine art, editorial and fashion. Within my photography I aim to tell a story, to evoke raw and genuine emotion. This medium has allowed me to meet and create with some of the best individuals I could have ever dreamed of, it has landed me many opportunities including multiple publications, local and international as well as local gigs within the community. My biggest focus is providing a fun, safe and inclusive environment. I want to show that photography is for everyone and if you truly have a passion for it, you can be successful. It truly is my passion and I am so very thankful that I get to create art on the daily.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is seeing my vision come to life and learning new techniques! I also really enjoy the final delivery of a gallery to a client, there’s always an anxiousness that comes when you go to hand over final work and seeing the excitement and hearing feedback from others is always a good experience! Art is subjective and it’s constantly changing and so being able to adapt with trends or adapt against trends is really interesting. I definitely enjoy challenging myself, especially when it comes to editing, im constantly doing research and talking with other people in the community, messing around with lighting and editing tools to really capture the look i’m aiming for. I also really enjoy working with other creatives so the process as a whole is extremely rewarding, especially when you have other artists around that are contributing to making the set the best that it can be.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Yes! I’m self taught and so for a long time I heavily relied on myself and myself only, I didn’t fully understand the ins and outs of photography or how cameras worked (ISO, aperture, etc) so my biggest recommendation would be to join local groups on social media, or even national groups and post your work for feedback and interact with the individuals in said groups. I’ve learned so much by just seeing what settings people use, seeing base explanations for what specific cameras and lenses are good for, and what settings are good for where you’re shooting, whether that be indoors or outdoors. I’ve learned new techniques and little tips and tricks that I would have never thought of all by being active in the online community. Another resource I would recommend is find your local camera store, the go to place for equipment and set up supplies. Once I found a reputable location (shameless Schillers plug because they’re amazing) I was able to branch out and ask questions to really figure out what I needed for the vibes I was aiming for! Not to mention that most local shops will have pre owned and used equipment which makes buying things a little less daunting!
