We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kolor The Rapper. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kolor below.
Hi Kolor , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The most meaningful project that I’ve ever worked on is “Duality” My new studio album thats drop July 31st! It’s the most expressive and freeing music that I’ve ever created because It came from such a dark time and place. This project reminded me of who I am, what I want to be and to always listen myself. Honestly this year so far has been such a trying time. The pillars of my confidence were shaken to the core. I lost friends, my transportation, my means of making music, i even lost my hair at one point. From health issues to personal lost this was definitely my struggle season. I spent a-lot of my time working and going home. Just when it seemed hopeless I was able to pull inspiration from the sounds that I was hearing in my environment. I took those sounds, worked on some voice memos and began curating some of the first songs on this album. That’s when I realize that I’m going to always be making music. This is something that flows through me like water flows in the ocean. I can’t do nothing about the gift that I was given And my natural strengths lie within my ability to make myself and other’s experience joy. I needed to remember that’s there’s a peace and solitude in making music. That I could be myself( all of myself) in my music. Show casing the balance of all the energy I possess masculine, feminine, sad and happy. As a musician it is important to focus on the music itself, but there is such a strong business aspect of this industry that sometimes hinders you from enjoying the creative process. Numbers, views, followers and streams are crucial to being seen or taken seriously in this industry. You find yourself worried about what’s more marketable rather than what brings you happiness. This project is the manifestation of my thoughts as a queer black man. Songs that anyone can use to help create balance, peace and duality. It means so much to me because I was able to pick myself up out of a dark place just by creating the songs I wanted to hear. I am the change that I wanted to see.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Kolor, I am a singer, songwriter and producer. I started working in this industry professionally about eight years ago as a singer. However music does run in my family. I grew up in the church(in the choir) listening to my grandmother sing, while also being raised by my father Who runs a successful underground music studio business. After studying dance and music business in college I decided to take my singing and rapping serious.
In the pursuit of my music career I have
Choreographed dances for many clients, worked as a vocal director for artists, and I also have written songs for some artists in Miami as well.
I am a producer so my clients are also able to consult me about custom beats
made for their specific needs. These are just some of the services I provide.
What’s sets me apart is my consistency and detail Oriented style of work. I don’t stop until my client is satisfied (and as a pertains to my own music) I won’t stop until I am satisfied. My Keen experience for creating a specific vibe, In order to warrant a specific reaction or energy from its listener is something That helps me generate satisfied clients.
I am most proud of my personal music
Because as I grow as a person I learn how to portray the human being that I am becoming through the means of lyrics, flows, and beautiful melodies. Qualities that I have showcased through releases like “Kolored” or “Mind Your Business” where the dynamics in my life have evolved and so has the beats I make and the energy I provide on each song. I am hard-working, strong willed and fully equipped to serve the world by singing the hymns of the next revolution .the songs that make you feel good, or insight change around us.
“Kolor the rapper, Painting the world one rhyme at a time.”
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
You know for a long time in my career I’ve gotten so tired of relying on outside sources in order to get things accomplished. I struggled with leasing beats and getting the legal stuff together in order to have some of my music on all platforms so I started making my on instrumentals. Trying to commission someone for cover art costs so much money and then I have to go through someone else’s ideas and opinions to achieve my ideal look, so I decided to learn how to do my own cover art. Im usually a one man show, a solo operation if you will but I had to unlearn that I don’t need other people. Im literally a walking production! Even if it’s one or two trusted individuals I need some kind of team behind me because it take a village to raise a superstar.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
There’s two things I think society can do to best support its artist and creatives. For One, allow people to be themselves! There are two many times I’ve seen an emerging artist come out and the general public or the industry picks them apart for their opinions, physical diversity or sonic choices. For years there has been so many restrictions on whats socially acceptable in music. I started hiding parts of myself and not allowing them to shine through. I’m a human being which means my energy and dynamics are ever flowing and never in the same space at the same time. I am a person that possesses masculine and feminine energy. However, generally feminine men are not as marketable or successful in the eyes of certain people in the industry, but times are changing. I’m my new album “Duality” I take charge of the narrative and im in full control of how I present myself. The beauty of being human is being who you wanna be and choosing your life. secondly START PAYING PEOPLE!! So much money, time and effort goes in to making, singing, and rehearsing music. This is a service!! Performance is a service . remember that as a venue, you need a show. so if someone can undoubtably provide one for you they shouldn’t be paying you to perform….and that’s just how I feel.
