We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Koereyelle Mallard a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Koereyelle, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?
One of the most common challenges for business owners in this current climate is the ever changing marketing trends. Social media platforms are prioritizing different types of content, new networks constantly popup and entrepreneurs are often forced to pivot their marketing plans to remain profitable.
This year, I pivoted my services to focus on helping experienced entrepreneurs learn how to leverage podcast, press opportunities and partnerships to make sales instead of relying on social media. Podcasts are the future and they’ve proven to be worth the investment of time and energy.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I began my professional career as a classroom teacher and managed to turn my $32,000 teaching salary into a million dollar digital brand. Over the last decade, I’ve launched multiple women empowerment brands to support entrepreneurs as they start, grow and scale their businesses. I am a multi-media personality and host of the Girl Stop Playin Podcast where I encourage women to stop playing with their potential and start WERKing for what they want in life and in love! I also mentor women in the media space by showing them a simple process to sell their premium programs by leveraging podcasts, press opportunities & partnerships.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
In 2020, my team and I were thrilled about hosting our first in-person event for our online students. We sold out the event six months in advance, only to have our plans shut down due to Covid. We ended up refunding over $70,000 in tickets and had to quickly figure out a plan to pivot.
Instead of completely giving up on our goal, we transitioned into a digital event where we were able to serve even more women from all around the world and still managed to make an impact.
Conversations about M&A are often focused on multibillion dollar transactions – but M&A can be an important part of a small or medium business owner’s journey. We’d love to hear about your experience with selling businesses.
I sold my travel agency in 2021 to one of my travel agents. She was able to expand her existing clientele and get closer to her goals. The biggest lesson other business owners can take away is to set their business up with systems from the start. Because I had proper systems in place, she was able to easily take over operations, bring on new agents and increase revenue.
