We were lucky to catch up with Kody Newton recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kody thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
Industry standard. I hate hearing those terms on a film set. It indicates that there is only one way to be creative. To make art. I feel that our way of making films differs greatly from the Hollywood style and it makes all of the difference. Here’s a few ways we think outside of the box. 1. Cost – We keep a tight group of filmmakers on our set so that we can keep costs low and get the biggest bang for our buck. We work hard to secure locations that we know we can use without permits and reverse engineer our scripts to use these locations. As one Hollywood actor stated, “It’s the wild west of film out here”. We wouldn’t have it any other way.
2. Vision – The film industry has changed over the years and we are hoping to preserve some of the magic from cinema in our childhood. A part of that is not attaching an agenda to our films. We aren’t setting up the next film universe. Our interest is to have our vision and bring that to fruition without the red tape of executives.
3. Creativity – Thinking outside of the box allows us to put all of our creativity towards our film goal. What we don’t have in amazing locations or sound stages we make up with characters, writing and practical effects. There’s a warmth to our films where you can feel the passion of cinema within it’s frame.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a full time filmmaker in Boise Idaho. I travel the world writing, directing and shooting narrative films and commercials. I have made 4 feature films and my 5th called “2:59” is filming at the end of June. I have always loved making films, whether it be in the backyard with my family or on the set of “The Chosen” tv show in Utah which I worked on for season 2. The core of my business is it was my passion first. In 2016 I made a 90 min film with my kids and their cousins as a way for them to enjoy time together and have fun. Little did I know that after we finished the film, we showed it in 3 different states and raised over $25,000 fir Make-A-Wish. Since that moment watching our movie in a theater, I knew what I had to do. I moved over to full time filmmaking in 2017 and have never looked back. A niche I have been able to provide is professional looking films at a fraction of the cost. We try and work creatively with any budget and bring everything we have to a set. People hire me because of the creativity that I bring, the hard work I provide and the professional end product of each film I work on.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of working as a creative is having a film or short or a piece of art that I am able to share with other amazing people. We can look at our product and be proud of what we achieved together and what we overcame. The communal aspect of film really helps me to look forward to each next chapter and the relationships and friends that I get to make along the way.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My mission, or motto has always been Dare. Drive. Dream. In order to do something worthwhile, we have to DARE to achieve that goal. Dare to believe that we are capable of doing it. We won’t be able to just go out and do it. That’s where learning the craft comes into play. So we have to have the DRIVE to learn new things, hone the craft and execute our goals. Finally, when you have done the other two, you’ll be able to live the DREAM, which is creating your vision while supporting your family. Everything comes back to how we spend time with our family and if we do the best to support them, we will never have regrets.
