We were lucky to catch up with Kody Davis recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kody, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you manage your own social media?
Currently I manage my own, but I am looking for a team. To help with things like promoting, bookings, responding to customers in a timely matter, etc. Which I do a good job at but I want to expand so I’ll need more hands.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m 22, I have a toddler and I’m a Davis! If you know my family you know we love to party and dance. Every event you could find me in the middle of the dance floor but I wouldn’t dance anywhere else. Until my big sister joined real dance class, who doesn’t want to be like big sis. The different styles intrigued me and I fell in love with learning. While in college I didn’t want to work a 9 to 5 but still wanted income so I decided to use dancing as my job and been on a journey ever since. Party planning started off as a hobby and way to save money by planning/decorating our own events. The older I got it turned into a passion but I would still just do family members for free. Then one day I realized that my work was actually good and very time consuming, especially because we hand make a lot of items, so I decided to turn my passion into a business.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I was working at Friday’s, the worst job of my life, making less than $100 checks and barely any tips. I decided I wanted to quit so I took my last check plus a loan from my parents, went to buy my business name, booked a dance studio, downloaded Canva, made a flyer and bought snacks and drinks. Then I took the money from my dance classes and bought supplies for my party planning/decorating business.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
WORD OF MOUTH! Don’t get me wrong social media can be awesome for the growth of clientele… but there is nothing like a customer referring a new client. They’ve already seen your work, heard about your customer service so they’re pretty much comfortable and ready to spend. I get most of my new clients from an old client.
