Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to K’nek. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
K’nek, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Well to start with, everything that I am now started from taking the biggest risk of my life back in 2017. I was stuck at a dead-end job that I hated. Six years prior, I was a part of an up-and-coming Christian Hip-Hop group that disbanded abruptly due to personal reasons. Ever since that day, I felt incomplete. I was living without any true purpose. See, I knew that my God-given purpose was in music, but I was too afraid to go after it. Especially after the past failure.
One day after a life-changing bible study with my youth pastor, God gave me a vision of a recording studio. After several days of fasting and prayer, that vision became a purpose. So I took action and began looking for a place to rent out for the recording studio. After some searching, I found an empty garage that was available for rent. I immediately called the landlord, and he told me that it would be $2500 to move in and $950 every month following. This is where the risk came in, lol.
Ironically, all I had in my account at the time was the move-in cost. I had a good job, but I wasn’t able to save much due to living expenses. I knew that I could pay the move-in cost, but I had no idea where I was going to get an additional $950 for the following months to come. Plus I needed funds to build the recording studio since it was an empty garage. On top of all that, I absolutely had no real credit to take out any business loans.
At that moment, I realized that I either had to let doubt win, or trust God. I chose the latter with great uncertainty and fear, lol. But God knew what He was doing! As soon as I paid the move-in cost, God began His work. From construction workers to electricians, God sent me everything I needed. Donations were coming in from everywhere. It’s like God was just waiting for me to trust him, so He could take action. That was five years ago. I now have a fully functional recording studio where I do music full-time as a Christian recording artist, as well as help other artists achieve their goals in the music business.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
Of course. My birth name is Wesly and ever since I was born I had a tremendous fascination with music. While others were listening to one single at a time, I was listening to entire discographies. So it’s no surprise that I would seek a music career years later. I first got into the music industry with the Christian Hip-Hop group I mentioned earlier. And over the years I’ve learned so much about both the business side of the music industry as well as the creative side.
As an artist, my music is always centered around motivation, positivity, and spirituality, which are the codes that I live by. It’s kind of hard to describe my music, but others have referred to my music as “Good Vibe Music” or “Testimony Music”. In a nutshell, I make music for people who want more out of life. With all that being said, I also would like to mention that I will be releasing my long-awaited debut album “The Journey” on November 11th of this year!
As a proud owner of WesTheTech Productions and “The House” Recording Studio (short for, “the house that God built”), my mission is to empower independent recording artists to build a full-time music business, so they no longer have to work outside of their craft. I also strive to help beginning artists reach their full potential by offering music production services that are geared toward positivity, spirituality, and encouragement. From teaching artists about music distribution to mixing/mastering songs from scratch, I do it all. I can help with every area of music that an artist wants to improve in.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Sure. Besides the trials that I faced being a first-time business owner, I think these last couple of years have been my biggest test of resilience. Only a couple of months after I started working on my album, I began feeling unusually fatigued. Once I realized that I wasn’t getting better after a few weeks, I decided to go see a doctor. That general doctor visit turned into an emergency hospital stay.
Long story short, my blood pressure had been at a critical level for some time. On that day I was diagnosed with acute kidney failure in both of my kidneys. I was going to have to be on kidney dialysis moving forward until I could get a “possible” kidney transplant. If you know anything about kidney dialysis treatment, then you know that it is a process that is draining. It’s extremely difficult to function normally afterward. I knew that God was going to make a way for me, so I wasn’t going to let my new condition stop me from making music.
Ninety percent of this upcoming album was done during that period. The days that I could stand, I recorded. On the days I couldn’t, I wrote. Either way, I continued to be productive throughout probably the most challenging time of my life. By the grace of God, I’m now back in full health and ready to continue the journey. Hence, the title of the album.
What do you find most rewarding about being creative?
Honestly, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist for me is actually helping other independent artists. Being an independent artist is challenging, especially when you don’t have any prior knowledge or resources. Empowering other recording artists is everything to me. Sometimes I feel that I should probably focus more on my music career, but nothing is more rewarding to me than seeing that lightbulb turn on for another artist. My Youtube channel is almost entirely comprised of music industry tip videos and tutorials. I love making music, but I love helping others more. And as an added benefit, helping others gives me a chance to minister to people in ways that my music may not.
