We were lucky to catch up with Knar Townsend recently and have shared our conversation below.
Knar , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
The name Knarlyworld started from my childhood nickname jknar that my Uncle gave me. Once Ant and I joined forces he randomly called me with the dope idea for us to call ourselves Knarlyworld. Shout out Mike Meyers!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Sooooo that was alot of questions for one question, lol. All jokes aside —
Ant and I (Knar) are cousins from Compton, CA. We both were born into the music industry because of our families. We were exposed to it on so many different levels at a young age, whether we’re talking about playing drums for various artists or producing music for various artists. I’ve played the drums for a lot of my friends over the years and one day decided to create my own lane/image/sound.
Creative works that we provide is that we love to give back to the community and involve the youth so we started pulling up to different skateparks and we would perform but also allow the youth to showcase their talent as well.
I think what sets us apart from others is we don’t ever take shit too serious. We love what we do and we think it’s important to have fun in whatever it is your doing.
We’re most proud of what we’ve accomplished in the past two years since becoming a band.
I could only hope whoever we cross paths with (fan, client, followers) in the years to come will be inspired by our journey.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
My side hussle has always been drumming. I’ve been playing ever since I could reach the foot pedal. lol. Over the years I’ve played for different local bands to eventually traveling with various artists. Being around so many people on different levels has really pushed me to tap into myself. Starting my own band is me living my own dream.
A couple of milestones that have been dynamic for Knarlyworld would be a residency we got in Las Vegas, NV at Double Down Saloon which is a popular punk venue. Also, our single I’m not Done was featured on the movie Bora which can be found on Tubi and Amazon.
How did you build your audience on social media?
To be honest be we don’t do anything to build our audience. We really show up as our most authentic selves and that alone has built our fan base. and keep our fans around. We try not to put too much pressure on having a crazy following on social media because honestly quality over quantity. We make sure to keep our followers entertained and in the loop.
Don’t get us wrong tho, we love meeting new people and grateful for the new followers as they come.
To anyone just starting off to build their social media we would say to just show up as your true self no matter what because people will gravitate to that.
