We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kmaia Mix. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kmaia below.
Kmaia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I am currently in the learning phase of this process. In order to grow in this field you have to constantly learn new things and test yourself. I have been singing at open mics for the past 3 years. I have become more comfortable. Now I am learning how to make my own music. Writing, vocal producing, buying the right equipment, ALL OF IT! Every time I go to my friend to record I ask so many questions. It’s like I am in school all over again.
Kmaia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Kmaia (Kah-mya) but I go by Mixx. I have always been a singer for as long as I have been alive. I get my singing abilities from my father. My father got it from his father. We are a singing family! I have been in gospel choirs in high school and college. Currently, on the praise team at church. I also sing at open mics all around Raleigh, NC and anywhere else I can find! I am a great networker so everywhere I go I make connections! Producers, singers, DJs, EVERYTHING! I think the kind of music that I want to make is what sets me apart. I want to make R&b music while also making music for God. I want to mix the two! Cross genres!! I am most proud of my name. Mixx. My grandfather passed away January 16, 2024. He was a Mix and a singer. So I added an “x” and now I will forever be called Mixx. Just like my grandpa, and my dad. I want my current and future fans to know that I truly love connecting with people through music. That is a language in itself!
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I took advantage of the singing lessons my Dad got me when I was younger. I could’ve been a beast by now! There is a lot of skill that comes with singing. Vocal techniques, vocal rest, vocal exercises, drinking fluids, reading music, terms and more! With that vocal lesson I could have known most of this and trained my voice to be better than it is now. Everything happens in right timing though so no worries. :)
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I think the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is seeing people know the words to my music already! I dropped my first single on March 11, 2024 called You Said. People knew the words the next day!! It makes me feel great. I feel like I have a support system.
