We were lucky to catch up with Klarke Taylor recently and have shared our conversation below.
Klarke, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later?
I have been writing short stories since I was in elementary school because I have such a large imagination. I wish that I would have taken my writing seriously from the beginning. Of course it was fun, but I did not realize that I could actually make a living off of it. Art and creative services are a lot of the times looked at as JUST hobbies, but they can also be careers where you are allowed to have as much control as you want. Having that control while benefitting from my very intimate work is freedom to me. If I would have had more information and support as a child I would be in a much happier position career wise.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I do not have a funny or rags to riches story to tell about how I started writing short stories and poems. I was an energetic and happy child who had so many thoughts, ideas, perspectives, and a wild imagination that I had to do something with all of that energy. The amount of stories and scenarios that I could come up with off the whim at a very young age would bring joy to my family and friends. I loved entertaining others and I knew I was unique artistically. As time went on and I matured, I realized that art is not JUST entertaining others. Art can also be therapeutic! It can be therapeutic for the artist and to the audience, which is the niche I decided to settle in. I am most proud of the conversations I now have due to my writing and the many strangers that tell me how helpful my writing is for them. I want to continue to be that real breath of fresh air people are looking for.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Two reoccurring lessons I had to unlearn is that everything does not have to be perfect and that there are various ways to reach an end goal. The reason I was so reluctant to take my writing seriously was that I thought I had to write about certain topics on top of making sure I write them in a perfect robotic generic way. I really had to sit down and make a decision to not put myself in a box and to not be the average writer. I want readers to feel like a real person wrote that poem or short story almost like we are in the room together. I need things to feel authentic to readers otherwise I am just another writer using pretty words.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Not that I have a large reputation, but I do appreciate that others, especially creatives, know I am a person who stands on what I believe. I have a strong mindset while still being able to share my weaknesses. My willingness to accept the emotional risk that comes with being a writer is something that many commend; it is a balance that most have come to respect and admire.
