We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Klara Poznachowska. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Klara below.
Alright, Klara thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I am very fortunate to be working with musicians who are truly inspiring and devoted to music. One of my main projects, which I’m really passionate about, is Trio Klemer. Along with Iranian clarinetist Mehrpouya Daneshvar and American bassist Lucas Phillips, we formed a music group focused on creating bridges between cultures and traditions around the world. The music we compose is not only for harp, clarinet, and double bass but also for string quartet and drums. As a trio, we have worked with many artists from around the world, gaining more inspiration and musical freedom. We are working on releasing an album next year with original compositions and arrangements.
My next very exciting project is a collaboration with Mario Salvador Rodriguez, a tres player from Cuba. We aim to present original and classical music for harp and tres, introducing a new sound that has never been represented before. Through our deep admiration for classical music, we want to honor and expand the endless possibilities for our instruments. We will be releasing an album next year.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Klara, and I was born in Warsaw, where I grew up and attended music school. I began playing the harp at the age of 7, studying under my professor, Alina Baranowska-Liese. Throughout 12 years of studying with her, she helped me prepare for music festivals and international competitions. I can proudly say that if it were not for her, I wouldn’t be studying in the United States. In 2019, I was accepted to Berklee College of Music with a Full-Tuition Scholarship, and I began my studies in 2020. During my studies, in 2022, I was accepted to the Berklee Global Jazz Institute as the third harpist in the history of the program. The institute’s main focus is to teach musicians how to create a better environment through our craft. Being part of this institute gave me many opportunities to learn from renowned jazz artists from around the world and collaborate with musicians who share the same love for music.
In May 2024, I graduated from Berklee College of Music with a major in Performance, and in Fall 2024, I will be pursuing a Master’s Degree at the Berklee Global Jazz Institute with a Full-Tuition Scholarship.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
As a harpist, my aspiration is to open up endless possibilities for musicians who are afraid to express themselves through their instrument. I believe that everyone, regardless of the instrument they play, should feel welcome to improvise. Non-traditional jazz instruments, such as the harp or any string instrument, have the same potential as the piano, drums, bass, or saxophone to play improvisational music. Through my art, I want to demonstrate that it is possible to play jazz, funk, rock, blues, or R&B on my instrument.
I believe everyone has a story to tell through their instrument, and we can all gain more by uniting and being honest with one another.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When I was 20 years old, I underwent a 35-day treatment in the hospital due to a dangerous disease. I wasn’t allowed to have visitors or see my family for over four weeks because of COVID-19 restrictions.
I must admit, I was at my lowest point because, for the first few weeks, I couldn’t walk or function on my own. Additionally, the lack of access to music made me feel weak and hopeless.
Nonetheless, what kept me going was finding strength in Jesus’ words and placing my trust in Him. The experience brought me closer to understanding the life purpose God assigned to me. He gave me the talent to heal people through music therapy, using my musicality to tell the stories of the oppressed and those in need of help.
Since then, I have been striving to make the world a better place by using my gift.
