We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kjradiant a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kjradiant , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
My mission is to empower those that are struggling with her mental health, as well as their personal identity when it comes to the world of influencing and creative content. When I was a young girl, I spent all my time watching America’s next top model, and just dreaming of being on the screen one day, however, living in a predominantly white area ( as a black girl) really was challenging for me as far as my black identity and who I was in society. I felt really alone and thought I wasn’t good enough to be a model or ever to be on TV. In college my freshman year I had my third suicide attempt and it really opened my eyes. That mental health was ruining my life and that I needed to make a difference. I spent 2 1/2 years working on building up my brand, developing a community, and eventually landing with KJ’s world, a mental health, focus, empowering and self confidence and love channel all about uplifting and empowering the women of our society. However, shortly after that time, I had a devastating thyroid condition that led to the change in my eyes my heart and it greatly impacted where I stood in my industry. I felt like I had lost my purpose and stepped away from my mission. This I had to heal and gather myself, all the time that I was away I kept looking at everyone else, continuing to live their life and thrive and it really lit a fire in my heart to pick myself up and continue going back towards what I love doing the most, which is creating content. I love what I do and it’s important that we focus on mental health as we try and be productive in todays society.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Kj’s World started as a way for me to expand my horizons in photography and do it in a way that incorporated, fun creativity, and a representation of me as a whole. I’ve always been adamant about my love for Disney and I rarely saw that many black content creators that were making Disney related content. Thus my page was started. Originally I started building up different things to incorporate the different stages of life I was going through. It eventually turned into what I had wanted it to all along: a Disney series. Tons of different Disney inspired content, each with different concepts that incorporated the theme and underlying messages of these movies. I love what I do and essentially I want to keep taking my brand higher and higher. I believe my brand has endless opportunities ahead of me, such as movie merging deals, red carpets, and even one day, glamorous TV show moments. But for now I focus on picking myself back up after my two surgeries, and getting back into the creating game. It has been a little difficult, but I believe through the struggle, character is built. The thing that I’m most proud of is my earliest themes, simply the color composition and the way that the photos all coordinated with one another is definitely something exceptional. I got in this industry because I wanted to model, i grew up watching Tyra Banks on TV. It was just evident that that’s what I wanted to do with my life. After spending several years taking different photography classes, I learned that I also liked being behind the camera as well as a n front. So it wasn’t long before I realized, and started to master my own self portraits and being able to take them with creative edits and spontaneous themes to keep my followers and audiences anticipating my next batch of content.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
So about a little over a year ago, I was diagnosed with Graves’ disease. After many years with an eating disorder, and years of anxiety and depression, I was hospitalized after overworking myself and my heart. My thyroid has become highly overactive, and it has greatly impacted my life. It caused my eyes to pop out of my head, my heart to race super fast, so much so I could hardly get up or do anything. Eventually, after a CAT scan I was rushed to the emergency room where I spent a week in the hospital pumped on steroids to get my heart rate to lower. The doctors raced in and out trying to figure out the best way to deal with me as they were unsure why my thyroid had gotten so severe before any treatment was done. After I got out the hospital, I had to have two surgeries on both of my eyes, which to this day the scars still remain. My eyes never fully recovered however and it’s a little tough to have confidence these days. But I’m not one to let anything stop me so once my surgery scars had mostly healed and even though my eyes never completely healed, I’ve gone right back to content creating, the thing I love most. So not only do I have a tattoo that says resilient, my struggle dealing with Graves’ disease has definitely shown me resilience as I won’t let anything stop me from creating content that inspires me and others.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
As a Capricorn strategy has always been the key to my success. If I want to start a business, I’m strategizing and planning it out fully. And that’s exactly what I did to become a content creator. I spent a lot of time wishing I could just get started and looking at everyone else. Eventually, I started off by making a list of all of the people that were in my similar niche and all of the people that were successful doing what I wanted to do. Once I had my list I went through each of those accounts, and learned about them. I learned about how they made their success, and I researched all of their methods and studied their content and hashtags. As well as their content schedules( what times did they post or how often they posted on their stories). After I had highlighted what exactly I wanted to do and how I wanted it to look, then came the next step: breaking down exactly how I was going to do it. For me it was going to be in themes, so I planned those things out. I made a list of all the different things that I would want to do and all the things that it would take to do those as well as any other little details that could make it go smoothly. Last, but not least I begin to create with my content strategy in place and the success is in the results. There’s a few other things I do as well when it comes to content strategy and how I grow my audience through social media. Eventually I will be selling my content strategy so that others can use it as well and it’s fully detailed with all the steps and breakdowns of the different social media platforms, and how I get my success, along with the statistics and the numbers to prove it. As for any advice for someone that’s just starting out I would say identify your niche, stick to your niche and dominate your niche. Only add or go to another niche if you’ve already blossomed and thrived in your current niche. Don’t try and have a lot of different things going on at one time, It can get over complicated and can definitely burn you out. Stick with one thing, make it your life, make it your baby, make it successful and then move onto the next.
