We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kj Bennett. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kj below.
Kj, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. The first dollar you earn is always exciting – it’s like the start of a new chapter and so we’d love to hear about the first time you sold or generated revenue from your creative work?
The money I generated at the beginning of my creative journey came by way of hustling tee shirts with graphics I designed on them. Most of the things I started with at the beginning of my journey are still things I implement into my artistry/branding to this day. Stickers, buttons, hats/tee shirts. Things like that. At every new beginning or new thing I’m trying, it feels great. Like when I sold my first painting or my first print or my first tee shirt. It’s always dope to get ideas out and into people’s possession.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I began my journey as a graphic designer years ago when I was interning for a sports and fitness company. I was making their infographics in an office. At the point I was just using Canva. That basically jumpstarted me into making graphics and designing stuff for tee shirts. I was exploring screenprinting also, my dad and I had a screenprinting setup in a workshed in our backyard. Fast forward, I always dappled in drawing and painting, because I kind up gave up when I was an art student but I doubted my ability to learn to draw. What sets me apart is my creativity and the spirit I put into my designs, marketing and the middle ground I enable with my supporters/buyers. I’m very personable. I’m very proud of being consistent and learning and growing along the way. Doing my best to stay valuable and creating things that people want to buy and support. I paint, I make visuals, I create images/posters by way of photos I take of scenery.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I’m easily inspired. I enjoy learning about myself as I grow and learn along my day to day to be a better creator/artist and business owner. That understanding of self helps me create in different mediums and want to get better in those lanes that I want to occupy creatively. It’s definitely not just a money grab, I really care and want to put myself into my work as much as I can..but I don’t care about the rules. I respect the game, but I’ve always been rebellious, so I couldn’t care less about the “rules”.
Have you ever had to pivot?
There was a time where I wanted to make a shift with Joee Spacey. I was trying my hand at different methods of execution. I’ve done embroidery, vinyl by way of heat press, screenprinting (doing it myself) and now again by way of my mentors print shop. I’ve also had similar shifts in time of the visuals I’ve made and the painting journey. As I learn and grow, I turn a page and implement what I’ve learned and got better at doing.
