We were lucky to catch up with Kizzy McCray-Sheppard recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kizzy, thanks for joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
In the health field, we often focus so much on the health of others that we often take a backseat. It was at the peak of COVID in 2020, when my life would change for the better. I know that may sound a little off-kiltered, because the world as we knew changed; we were learning how to navigate what became the new normal around the world. As a nurse practitioner, I continued to see patients, and actually ended up having to take on an extra workload, all while providing for my family. It was March 27, 2020, as I was headed into the office to get some paperwork for a 1 PM meeting, I was listening to Sirus radio Anthony Brown’s song this week and I did not know how significant that song would be for me a few minutes later. See as I turned into the parking lot, I began to have some excruciating pain, a pain I had never felt before. As I made it in the office I fell to my knees, and my colleagues rushed over. To make a long story short, I was rushed to the local trauma center, and my husband met us there. The staff was asking me questions, and I was fading out, foaming out of my mouth and slurring my words. I must say God was really working for me because they allowed my husband to come back, and he could advocate for me. I was literally losing my life, I had internal bleeding, and I lost over half of the blood in my body and my blood pressure was fifties over thirties. There is so much I could say about this event, but I will sum it up… I received multiple bags of blood through rapid tranfusion to stabilize me for emergent surgery. During that event, a nurse begin to sing nothing but the blood of Jesus while I was in the trauma bay and as I heard him it reminded me of the goodness of the Lord and I knew I was going to be ok. It was that day, that truly made me become a self-care advocate. I almost lost my life, because I consistently took a backseat. That week I felt a little off, but I brushed it off as first-trimester issues, oh did I fell to mention I was pregnant at the time too. I discovered that I had to focus on patient number one and that was me. People often ask me if I think self-care is selfish or selfless and my response is both. See, you have to be selfish to take of yourself first in order to be selfless to take care of everyone else. It was during my first week of recovery that I decided that I had to move forward with Limitless Possibilities Now, because I knew there were others who need the recipe to Living Limitlessly in every aspect of their lives.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to learn how to embrace the power of “No.” I was the go-to person at home, work, church, and community. If someone needed help or something done, I would respond with a “Yes,” even if it meant I would lose sleep to help someone else meet a deadline. When I truly embraced the power of No being a complete sentence, it improved my life. I had to stop saying yes, to everyone to become limitless by saying yes to me. Self-care is essential, and the lack thereof almost cost me my life when I wasn’t putting myself first.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Having empathy and looking at each person individually, not as a number. People know when you care and when you don’t. It’s not easy to put yourself in someone else shoes, but being able to listen to someone to understand is invaluable. I’ve learned to treat others the way I desire to be treated. They will never forget how you treated them versus what you did for them. Empathy goes a long way, and it’s easy to have compassion when you walk in love. I believe in providing legendary service and leaving a lasting imprint.
