We were lucky to catch up with Kizzy Alleyne recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kizzy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
The idea for My Skin Glows was born out of a deeply personal journey that blended necessity, passion, and heritage. As a Caribbean woman, I’ve always been surrounded by rich traditions of natural self-care, passed down through generations. Growing up, I watched the women in my family use ingredients straight from the earth—ginger, hibiscus, turmeric, and exotic oils—to care for their skin and for medicinal purposes. These rituals weren’t just about beauty; they were about self-respect, love, and a deep connection to our roots.
As I got older, I quickly realized how hard it was to find products that honored both my skin type and the luxurious, nature-infused rituals I grew up with. The beauty aisles were filled with generic formulations that felt clinical or overly commercial. More often than not, I found myself disappointed—either the ingredients didn’t align with my values, or the products weren’t formulated for melanated skin. And so, the frustration began to build. I knew I couldn’t be the only one searching for high-quality, intentional body care that not only worked but felt indulgent.
At first, creating my own products was purely for me. I started formulating balms and body oils in my kitchen, using ingredients I knew and trusted: babassu oil for its incredible moisture-locking properties, cranberry butter to nourish and smooth, and meadowfoam oil for its lightweight yet potent antioxidant profile. I intentionally avoided the usual suspects like shea and coconut butter, not because they aren’t amazing, but because I wanted to craft something that felt truly unique—something that stood out in a sea of sameness.
The turning point came when friends and family started asking what I was using. People were noticing the glow, the hydration, the softness. They weren’t just complimenting my skin—they were asking to buy whatever I was using. That was the spark. I realized there was a real gap in the market for body care that celebrated all skin types and tones while offering a sensorial, luxurious experience.
From a business perspective, it made complete sense. The body care market is saturated, yes, but much of it lacks true intention. Many brands treat body care as an afterthought, focusing all their innovation on facial skincare. But our bodies deserve just as much love and attention. I saw an opportunity to shift that narrative—to educate, to inspire, and to provide products that felt like self-care rituals, not just routines.
The logic behind launching My Skin Glows was grounded in both emotion and strategy. Emotionally, it was about creating something that felt authentic to me and resonated with others like me. Strategically, I understood that consumers were becoming more ingredient-conscious, more experience-driven, and more connected to brands that told a meaningful story. I wasn’t just offering body butter—I was offering a moment of escape, a way to reconnect with yourself at the end of a long day.
What excited me most was the chance to reimagine what body care could be. I didn’t want to just solve a problem; I wanted to elevate the experience entirely. That meant focusing on every detail—from the texture of Velvet Touch Body Souffle, to the scent profile of Maracas Bay, to the sourcing of ingredients. I worked with a formulator to ensure that every product felt like a hug for your skin.
The excitement also came from knowing I could help people feel seen. So many body care brands miss the mark when it comes to inclusivity. My Skin Glows is for everyone, but it’s especially for those who have often felt overlooked in the beauty space. Our mission is to make body care a cherished part of your wellness journey—not just another step, but a celebration of your skin.
Launching My Skin Glows wasn’t just a business decision; it was a calling. I knew it would work because I believed in the purpose behind it. I had lived the gap it was filling. And with every testimonial, every glowing review, every message from a customer who finally feels confident in their skin, I’m reminded that this was more than a good idea—it was the right one.
We’re not just selling products; we’re cultivating a movement around self-love, skin health, and cultural pride. That’s what drives me every day. That’s why My Skin Glows exists. And that’s why I know we’re just getting started.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a Caribbean woman in my mid-40s, originally from Trinidad and Tobago, and I’ve lived in Miami for most of my life. My background is rooted in culture, tradition, and the kind of wisdom that gets passed down through generations—especially when it comes to caring for your body with ingredients that come from the earth.
My journey into body care started when I began noticing changes in my skin as I got older. The products I had relied on for years were no longer working the same way. My skin was becoming drier, rougher in texture, and increasingly resistant to everyday moisturizers. I didn’t want to settle for harsh chemicals or empty promises. I wanted real, nourishing solutions that worked with my skin—not against it. That search led me to start experimenting with natural, skin-loving ingredients in my own home. It began as a personal mission to restore my skin, but soon grew into something much bigger.
My Skin Glows offers a thoughtfully curated collection of products that feel indulgent, perform beautifully, and are rooted in intentional self-care. Our line includes:
• An extremely moisturizing body scrub that exfoliates gently while leaving the skin soft and supple
• An indulgent body soufflé that melts into the skin to deeply hydrate and nourish
• A delightful body oil that gives your skin a radiant, healthy glow without feeling greasy
• A unique body wash that cleanses without stripping your skin of its natural oils
Every product is formulated to address some of the most common skin concerns women experience—especially as we age or navigate changes in our environment. Whether it’s dryness, dullness, uneven skin tone, or a loss of elasticity, My Skin Glows is designed to help restore your skin to its healthiest, most radiant state. We avoid harsh chemicals and instead focus on effective natural ingredients from fruit and seed oil. We also include what we like to call “super ingredients” like glycolic acid and thiotic acid which help the skin to radiate!
What truly sets My Skin Glows apart is our dedication to creating products that celebrate and serve all women. Our community is made up of multi-ethnic women from all walks of life—Asian, White, Latino, African, African American, Indian, and Caribbean women—ages 18 to 65 and beyond. We know that skin care is not one-size-fits-all, and we make it a point to formulate with all skin tones and types in mind.
We’re not just another body care brand. My Skin Glows is about reclaiming the joy of taking care of your skin. It’s about creating daily rituals that are as nourishing for your spirit as they are for your body. I want our customers to feel seen, cared for, and celebrated every time they open one of our jars or bottles. I want our customers to feel love!
For anyone discovering My Skin Glows for the first time, here’s what I want you to know: This brand is built on intention, integrity, and love. Every product is a reflection of my heritage, my experiences, and my desire to help women feel confident in their skin. I believe that glowing skin is not just about aesthetics—it’s about how you feel. And when your skin feels healthy, soft, and radiant, it affects everything else.
We’re creating more than products—we’re building a community around wellness, education, and self-celebration.

Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
Yes, I do sell directly on my website, which is powered by Shopify. Choosing Shopify as my ecommerce platform was a strategic decision. As a business owner, I wanted a platform that was reliable, user-friendly, and scalable—something that could grow with My Skin Glows as the brand evolved.
There are several pros to using Shopify. First, it’s incredibly easy to set up and customize, which allowed me to design a storefront that reflects the beauty and luxury of the My Skin Glows experience. The backend is also intuitive, making it simple to manage inventory, track orders, and interact with customers. Shopify also offers powerful tools for marketing and analytics, which have been key in helping me understand my audience and make informed decisions about my business.
Another major advantage is Shopify’s ability to integrate with so many apps and services. Whether it’s email marketing, subscription services, or shipping solutions, Shopify makes it seamless to plug in the tools I need to run my business efficiently.
Of course, there are some cons. Shopify comes with monthly fees, and some of the more advanced features require additional apps that can add up over time. Also, while it’s easy to use, customizing beyond a certain point may require a developer or more technical know-how. But for me, the pros far outweigh the cons.
Ultimately, Shopify allows me to focus on what matters most: delivering high-quality products and a memorable experience to every customer who visits My Skin Glows. It’s helped me build a digital space that’s as welcoming and beautiful as the products we create.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One major lesson I had to unlearn was the belief that content creation wasn’t as important as having a good product. I used to think that as long as I had an amazing, high-quality product, everything else would naturally fall into place. I put so much focus into perfecting my formulas, sourcing the best ingredients, and ensuring my body care line delivered real results—because in my mind, the product was the brand.
But I quickly realized that in today’s world, especially in the beauty and skincare space, content is what connects people to the product. A great product sitting in silence doesn’t create community, educate customers, or build trust. It was a hard wake-up call when I noticed that brands with less effective products were thriving—because they were showing up consistently, telling their story, and building a relationship with their audience through content.
If I hadn’t pivoted my thinking, I could’ve remained invisible in a space where visibility is key. Now, I see content as an extension of my brand’s voice and values. It’s not just marketing—it’s storytelling, education, and connection. That shift changed everything.
