We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kiya Ricks a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kiya, thanks for joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
Definitely sooner! However, I also believe in perfect timing and when things are meant to happen they will, whether you’re really trying or not. In my case I was in my shell really up until a few years ago. Even though I felt I had overcame that shyness/introverted feeling, I still had ALOT of growing to do and lessons that needed to be learned for me to be able to cross those boundaries I put up for myself.
Kiya, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
In a lot of ways everyone would say I’m a jack of all trades, and I’m going through the process to master each one. (laughs) I’ve always been an independent person learning things, being interested in non popular things, like certain tv shows, music and even hobbies. My first love has always been writing. Whether it be in pen or typed on a computer. Short stories, plays, songs, poems, letters to loved ones. I also inherited this artistic gift from my mom. She would always draw, paint and write as well, and I would always get in trouble for coloring/writing in her books (laughs)
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect would honestly be the feeling of doing something you love and being able to express yourself in ways you sometimes feel only you could understand. Everyone always wonders why you do decide to do something and they’ll never really understand your passion behind it. It’s like having your own world you can disappear to whenever you want, where you can be whoever and do whatever you want, without everybody judging you.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Of course it is! All my life I’ve dreamt of traveling with my family, being able to take care of them and help them live the lives that they’ve dreamed of. Fun fact, my mom has never been out of the state of texas and I’ve always wanted to take her places and show her how much is really outside of Dfw. Aside from that making her proud will always be the biggest mission driving me to be better in every aspect of my life, and I hope to have the same influence on my future children.
