We were lucky to catch up with Kittie KaBoom recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kittie, thanks for joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I was asked to join the cast of a reality show back in 2010, but after we wrapped the show, we got word that we were not being picked up for a second season. As a result, I stayed in the NY/DC area for the next 6 years. I was bouncing around trying to get back to my passion of VO, Hosting and Writing for what felt like forever. Once I made it back to LA, I hit the ground running! I did my best to make up for lost time, buuuut the more I saw my peers on a constant upward trajectory, the more my “compare and despair” became a mainstay. I don’t regret showing up for the reality show, but I struggled a lot with the belief that I am not enough, and had I stayed in LA, I would be far more successful. I guess I still find it challenging when I hear about another colleague excelling and finding success where I have not…YET!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hi guys! My name is kittie KaBoom and I am a working VO Actor, Producer, Podcaster, Writer (and just recently) and Director. I began in this entertainment business by what I believe was completely divinity! I had interned at BET when the headquarters were still in Washington, DC, where I’m from. The day I went in, I had a stack of resumes and my plan was to distribute them to the producers and decision makers and casting people. I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do, but I knew it involved me being in front of the camera or microphone. An AP recognized me and told me to sit tight that someone had been looking for me that same day. The someone turned out to be a classmate from college who had just been tapped to be the Producer of a new show. When she saw me there, she told me to follow her and I met with several Executives that day. The last person I met with spontaneously was the VP of music programming and he agreed to have me host a music video show. The catch though, was that I would become a virtual reality character and speak in an authentic DC vernacular. The execs agreed to hire me on the spot, and I learned how motion capture works and how adlibbing and improv worked. The name of the original show was JAMZONE, but after a season of success, they extended it from one hour to a two hour show and renamed it after the character, calling it CITA’S WORLD. After a year in both DC and then NY, they relocated the show to LA and then cancelled it shortly thereafter. Not understanding that what I was doing was called Voice Over and AI generated character work, I didn’t know where to start looking for similar work. The same way that I divinely landed the job is the same way I secured an agent, a manager and immediately began booking multiple animated VO jobs for major networks.
I provide a service that is very niche and when I’m hired, it is to entertain, promote, market and/or advise. I absolutely LOVE what I do, especially the skill of Audio Description which I’m very proud of. I recently became certified in it, and It is an excellent opportunity to be of service to sight impaired people by speaking to them about what they cannot see…essentially becoming their eyes by describing the performance or space, or show etc. It has become just as rewarding as seeing a person crack up at my performance on an animated project.
I am grateful to have worked on shows like BOONDOCKS, AMERICAN DRAGON, BARNYARD, DANNY PHANTOM, SPIDEY AND HIS AMAZING FRIENDS, ROCK PAPER SCISSORS AND BUGGS BUNNY BUILDERS. I have also voiced national commercials for major brands, narrated a book on acx.com, as well as a story telling site. I have voiced meditations on a meditation app for moms and I recently began coaching one-on-one and teaching high school aged kids VO for animation in a classroom setting on OUTSCHOOL.COM.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My ongoing mission is to show up as the very best version of myself and use my voice to teach, entertain, promote and prayerfully keep the person listening interested and engaged! I am also working hard to create consistency in my work flow as a freelancer.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Any working VO Actor will tell you that sometimes doing auditions can be difficult . This is usually because you feel like you’re just screaming into the void when you’re not booking as many jobs as you would like. While attending a VO webinar, the speaker reminded the attendees that auditions are a critical part of our jobs. It helped me shift my paradigm and recommit to the least favorite part of the job for my growth and success.
