We recently connected with KISS AVERY and have shared our conversation below.
KISS, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
My most meaningful project to date is my most recent project called “Coming Out The Coffin”. This project was my first project I’ve ever fully created from the production, to the engineering, the songwriting, down to the recordings. It absolutely means the world to me not because of all the work that was put into it but it reflects a very dark and vulnerable time in my life and what I was going through during that time. The tipping point in my life started a little before I dropped out of college in 2016. So the time before I dropped out of school I’d became overly depressed because of so many things happening in my life and in life in general. I started to lose my focus in staying in school because I truly didn’t feel I belong at school and was wasting my time attending certain classes that ultimately were a waste of time. It didn’t make it any better when seeing all my friends graduate and leaving the campus while I was still there trying to figure out how I was going to manage socially. So ultimately I made the decision to drop out of school because of the factor that I was not happy and slowly dragging myself to classes with an empty backpack due to the lack of care of being there any longer. There were many other reasons why I decided to leave but that was the main reason. After leaving school and having to come back home after leaving my apartment I became overwhelmed with my family’s dynamic which I was not too fond of especially at this time. It made it very hard to carry on through my days and honestly I felt defeated each day alive. More stress has been added on to me from different disappointing events throughout my life whether it be my social life, career, purpose, identity, etc. it honestly was a lot and I could not manage being alive some days. Not all days were bad though I’ve met some extraordinary people during that time and one specifically a producer by the name of Cain that created a lot of the beats for my songs. Fast forward, we had a falling out to where I could not get in touch with him for some time. I had plans to create more music with him but those plans were crushed from the fallout. So I was left with decisions to make and because of this it added onto the growing depression I was already experiencing. There was a brief moment in time where I would look for producers to take his place but at the end of it all I could not find someone that could fit the caliber or replace the same relationship we created in the time we shared together. So I made the decision to no longer look for producers to help me and I would start to learn and create my own production for my music. Throughout all of 2020 I produced and recorded all the songs from the album which were the first 13 songs I’ve ever produced myself. I’ve had the opportunity to work with some amazing artists and creatives on this project, including one of my favorite artists and just humans on the planet, Lil B the BASEDGOD. Every song is the manifestation of my subconscious emotions built up for I had no exact idea of what I wanted to create specifically so it all poured out naturally and I followed my ears and heart on what sounded and felt the best. Each song on the album is inspired either from past experiences or thoughts and dreams of the future I want to create. Then finally in 2021 I felt it was the right moment to release and so I did. Even now this project is still growing and as of recent was able to have the opportunity through a colleague and now friend of mine to speak to a very prestigious and skilled engineer in the industry who has worked with legendary artists we all know and love today has agreed to help work on re-mixing and remastering one of my works on the project. We will all just have to wait for it to reach its final stage of manifestation before making a specific announcement on who and what the song is but I’m overly excited for this opportunity.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into music in general because my mom made me haha. I never on my own wanted to get into music not because I didn’t like it it’s because as a child I never really cared about anything to excel in. My motto was to be happy and have fun with the moment. But my mom saw a potential I did not at that age and placed me in every and anything she could to have my talent sharpened into a skill and hopefully spark something in me to eventually want to take it by the handles. I provide original music as a product and I also provide mixing and mastering audio as a service. I solve creative and technical problems for others who can not or just need a second helping hand. I believe what sets me a part is simply who I am, there is no other like me who is me, anyone can be what I am but not who, that’s what makes you and I special. I’m proud of the work and resilience I bestow when it comes to creating my music or any works of art. I also want fans and listeners to know that I am very passionate in what I create because I’m not afraid to be vulnerable, to me being sensitive is a super power that’s why they’re called senses.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Yes, I do believe there is fine thick line between creatives and non-creatives in understanding each other where non creatives will greatly struggle to understand the journey as a creative simply because they are not a creative so they do not walk that journey. The creative can only do so much as to portray the events and emotions that were created along the journey to non-creatives and that’s the best that can be done. A brief story that illustrated my resilience was when I defied my dad to make my studio in the basement of my parents home to achieve the sound I was looking for on the album even after threats of my equipment would be removed and kicked out the house. But I knew one way or another it was either my album was going to be great or mediocre and I chose to be great.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Yes. Simple. I am here to be who I am and show the world I am not afraid to lead as an example for other to not be afraid of being themselves as well. I love music and I create music to hopefully heal everyone that listens to it. Music is the Universal Language and I wish to speak it fluently and speak to every being on the planet.
