We were lucky to catch up with the edge control Goddess, Kisha Simpson, recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kisha thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
As a black woman with coarse, natural hair I wanted an edge control that would tame my edges, and leave them slick the entire day without melting or curling up. After trying so many different edge controls on the market, I decided to do my own research, and develop an edge control formula that would work on my hair. The edge control worked so well, I wanted to share it with other women with my hair type who also had problems finding an edge control that lasts the entire day.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I am Kisha Simpson, the owner, and creator of the world’s BEST edge control by Kisha K. Collection.
When I first started my natural hair journey back in 2012, it was a struggle to learn about what works best for my hair type. You would hardly ever see any products advertised for 4c hair. Nothing worked for my coarse, tightly coiled curls. Most moisturizers, shampoos, creams, etc on the market would dry my hair out, leave it brittle, and sometimes damaged.
I knew there had to be a way to care for my hair type without continuously wasting hundreds of dollars on products that did not work.
As I embarked on my haircare journey, I slowly began to make homemade products specifically for MY hair type. As I tried different hairstyles, I needed edge control that would sustain my edges throughout the day to complete my look.
Coming up with the Kisha K. Edge control was a long, tedious, and costly journey, but it is here today and has helped other people who faced the same challenges as I did when finding a great edge control for 4c hair.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
You have to treat everyone like a team player and not an employee. Always be willing to learn, you do not know everything. Hire people who are smarter than you and/or have degrees in that field. Treat everyone with respect. Your team works with you, not under you. Respect their positions and never refer to them as an employee. They are your team and they’re here to help you grow.
Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
There were no business loans. I flipped my own money. My startup came from my first $700 paycheck when I was working for Ross stores.
