We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kisha Prince a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kisha, thanks for joining us today. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
Keep Pressin’ Pretty was birthed out of pain and suffering. It was the three words I used to encourage myself while going through the most difficult time of my life. I lost my family to divorce, and lost my mind to the pain. During that tumultuous part of my journey I felt ugly and stuck. When I looked in the mirror, I didn’t like the person that I saw and I felt hopeless and alone. I was imprisoned by my horrible thoughts and the devastation of my situation. I couldn’t see the light at the end of the dark tunnel, but God did.
During that season of my life, God did a spiritual surgery on me and “Keep Pressin’ Pretty” were the words he placed on my heart. He reminded me of two scriptures–Isaiah 61:2-4 and Philippians 3:14. “Keep Pressin’ Pretty” along with those scriptures is what I used to affirm and reinvent myself. Sometimes we look for external sources of encouragement, but God let me know that I have what it takes inside of me to encourage myself. Those pivotal words would not only give me the strength I needed to get through my divorce, but it changed my life. With time, prayer, counseling, self care and daily affirmations, I was able to heal myself from the inside out. Keep Pressin’ Pretty reminds me everyday that I don’t look like the hell I pressed through. It is my affirmation, confirmation, and reiteration of the power inside of me to overcome anything. It signifies that I am survivor, I am fearless, and I am an overcomer!
Now I’ve turned my pain into purpose and used what I’ve learned and the tools that I’ve gained to empower other people. I leveraged Keep Pressin’ Pretty into a Amazon Best selling book and a line of merchandise. I literally wear Keep Pressin’ Pretty as a badge of honor. My goal for the Keep Pressin’ Pretty brand is to empower and encourage as many woman and girls to heal themselves from the trauma’s and mistakes of their past. We are not the mistakes we made and we will no longer be hostages of our pain. Keep Pressin’ Pretty will the catalyst for changing the narrative and will act as the key to unlocking someones greatness.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Kisha Prince and I am an empowerment enthusiast, mother, daughter, sister and friend. I have a passion for seeing people around me win and live their best life. I come from very humble beginnings, but through the grace of God and hard work I have been able to pursue my dreams and walk in my purpose. I went from growing up on public assistance in the ghettos of Detroit, Michigan to becoming a college graduate, administrator at a local Michigan Hospital and author of Keep Pressin’ Pretty, an Amazon number one best seller. I am a motivational speaker, divorce coach and online store owner of Keep Pressin’ Pretty merchandise. I was able to make sweet lemonade out of the lemons I was given on my journey.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
There is a chapter in my book, called “Hustle Pretty,” and in that chapter I talk about me not only surviving after my divorce, but actually thriving. I was determined not to be bitter, but to be great. To me that was the best revenge. Going through a divorce can be very taxing on your mind and your money. While going through the five stages of grief, I had to strategize my way out of my divorce without ending up in financial ruin. I sacrificed all luxuries and leisure for hustle and grind. I wrote down my goals, picked up two extra jobs, opened up a bank account in someone else name and saved up enough money to purchase a new home (yes I said purchase). I was homeless for a month after my divorce, before I move into a place that had my name on the deed. That puts a smile on my face just thinking about it. The enemies goal was to see me fail. The enemies goal was to see me destitute. The enemies goal was to destroy me emotionally and financially, but my will and determination gave me remarkable resilience to prosper and thrive.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is serving and empowering others with my gifts and talents. It is so fulfilling to hear people say how much I have inspired them from reading my book or listening to me after my motivational speeches. I created a shirt that is sold on my website (keeppressinpretty.com) that says “My Testimony is Greater Than My Test.” When I designed that shirt, I thought about how my test just affected me, but how my testimony has helped so many people. That means it was worth it at the end of the day.
