We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kisha Lee. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kisha below.
Kisha, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you share an important lesson you learned in a prior job that’s helped you in your career afterwards?
One of the most important lessons learned from a prior job was simple: Presence.
From my hourly jobs as a teenager at McDonald’s and Cub Foods (grocery store), to being a hairstylist and now spiritual teacher, mentor and healer, I’ve learned that the greatest foundational skill you can have in any career path is knowing how to be present.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
At 14 years old, I remember wanting to have certain things and my mother, a single immigrant mother raising two daughters, was not able to meet those needs so I decided to get a job. After applying to and being hired at the McDonald’s near our home, I realized being part of the workforce was quite challenging! So many emotions, so many different personalities, and so many expectations. I quickly learned that the customer actually isn’t always right, but that didn’t matter. The question for me was, how can I meet their needs?
That was almost thirty years ago, and since then every job I’ve had, even with the most challenging clients or customers, I ask myself the same question. Now, as a wellness service provider specializing in multiple modalities, I find that people come to me intentionally seeking solace, comfort, clarity, healing, etc. Many come vulnerable as they are going through particular circumstances and life transitions. I honor their vulnerability, and the fact that they sought after my guidance and services to assist them. I do not take that lightly. I am here to be of service. And, many times I receive as I give. My career in this phase of life is a gift I get to share with others.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Aside from training and acquiring knowledge, I believe authenticity is helpful in succeeding in my field of expertise. A friend once told me, “It isn’t just knowledge that’s power. It’s applied knowledge that’s power.” That stuck with me. It’s so easy on social media to create a persona, regurgitate info you’ve read, paraphrase info to make it your own, etc. I’ve also seen accounts blasting other accounts for copyright infringement as well. Social media can be a space of inspiration, but also duplicity. I recently had a client who was looking for a Reiki practitioner, and mentioned how so many practitioners she’s found only offer remote sessions. But, so do I. What stood out to her, was that I also have had hundreds of clients throughout the years receive in-person sessions. There is a difference. I believe both are effective means of healing, but it hits different when you are one-on-one with someone in-person. What I’ve noticed personally is just because someone has the credentials, looks the part, uses buzzwords and such, doesn’t mean they necessarily have the “hands-on” experience. This is something that can be seen, felt and heard when it’s true and authentic. I like to share personal stories from clients and even my own testimonials as a way to show not only can I talk the talk, but I also walk the walk. My current mentor has said, “Good teachers have tools. Great teachers have transmissions.” A transmission is a transference of energy. And energy speaks for itself.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I’m currently pivoting in my business and career. Over the past decade I’ve served as a full-time spiritual teacher and healer. I am being trained to become a Sex, Love & Relationship Coach who looks forward to assisting women through life cycles and transitions such as grief/loss, divorce, miscarriages/abortions, as well as menstrual cycles and menopause. This will be coupled with Traditional Indian Medicine (Ayurveda) and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) which I’ve been studying both over the past year as well. I will also be able to assist men in healing mother/father wounds, mastering their sexuality and their relationships to women in order to become better lovers, partners, and fathers. I already have experience working with women in the areas mentioned above, so I am now adding to my expertise and expanding my business in doing so.
