Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kirstin Speer. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kirstin, appreciate you joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
My learning journey with photography and content creation has been a long one! I was a part of the national art honors society in high school and went to Hanover College for studio art. I’ve always been creative, but when I moved to Kentucky and started traveling, my love for capturing the beauty of the world really took off. If I knew what I know now, I would have kept my camera with me at all times and taken more professional classes. The skills I think are most essential is to step out of your comfort zone, make your work unique to you, and never ever compare yourself to others! We are all on our own paths. When I think of what obstacles stood in the way of me learning more, I think a lot about my own self doubt. Not putting myself out there and introducing myself as a creative.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a central Kentucky photographer and content creator that has a passion for supporting local businesses and capturing the beauty through my lens. I enjoy photography as a hobby and have had the pleasure to work with businesses like Harvey’s Bar, Bites of the Bluegrass, The Scout Guide Lexington, Good Fellas, FEAST for FoodChain, etc. I got into photography and content creation through wanting to share my travels with others after attending art school and of course falling in love with horse country! I have moved into the micro-influencer field in the last 2 years by working to showcase local businesses.
I think what sets me apart in my work is that I capture it how it is. I find the natural environment the most beautiful and enjoy highlighting the mundane every day moments that often go unnoticed. I like to capture the emotion of a setting and often find my not favorite shots are taken during real life interactions.
I am naturally very outgoing and love to talk. Chances are, if you see me out and about, I’m yapping with just about anyone. I love making new friends and learning new things. I also love travel and sharing my experiences with others. I’m almost always a “yes” to most activities, but I refuse to set my personal morals aside. I am very passionate about inclusivity and hold myself and my clients accountable to maintaining my brand as an inclusive and safe space for all. I’m most proud of how many friends I’ve made over the years of being a photographer and content creator. Knowing the people of central KY makes every space much more special.

How did you build your audience on social media?
I built my online audience on social media by being my most authentic self. I make sure what I post aligns with my core values and beliefs. I share my best pictures and my more natural side to make sure I’m staying relatable. My advise for building your social media presence is to just talk to people, share your story, and be YOU.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
My journey is unlike many other creatives! I am a nurse that does not plan to make photography or content creation my full time job. I love my medical side and my creative side! I have found that when you’re only outlet is creativity and you make it into your main job, often times it takes some of the joy and awe out of creating. I love having two passions that I am incredibly lucky to follow and be successful in! And if you think you’re not a creative person, try things out! You’d be surprised at what you can learn, achieve, and create!
