Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kirsten Slocumb . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kirsten , appreciate you joining us today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
When running a business, marketing is everything. We live in an era where if it isn’t on social media then it doesn’t exist. I got my first client by marketing myself online. I post pictures and use both relevant and popular hashtags. I also pass out business cards and that helps me get new clients as well. When someone reaches out to you after discovering your work online, it feels special because they are essentially choosing you. They picked you because they like what they saw. Social media clients are some of my favorite clients to have.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I attended Elaine Sterling Institute and went through the nail program back in 2016. Prior to attending school I started first with doing designs on myself in regular polish, then doing press ons, and then trying out the notorious Kiss Acrylic Kit. I’ve always been passionate about the beauty industry. I’ve owned my own salon suite and I’ve worked for others. I’m most proud of how much I’ve grown. I used to be painfully shy when doing nails, but now I can easily hold a conversation with anyone. My work is steadily improving and I’m always learning something new. I’m passionate about what I do and the work that my name is attached to. When I service clients, I want them to trust me and know that I probably care more about how their nails look and the longevity than they do. Currently I am expanding my skill set. I am enrolled at Atlanta Institute of Aesthetics. I am taking clients for facials, waxing, brow tinting, makeup, body services, and lash extensions.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Currently I am on a new life journey. I am pursuing a new career in Aesthetics. When we decide to expand our services, it can be uncomfortable at first. I’m limited to doing nails on the weekends, I’m in school through the week and balancing motherhood, and I’m learning a new skill. I’m learning how to balance it all and constantly pivoting by wearing different hats in different roles.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
The nail industry is very costly. People do not realize that. It happens very often that a client may complain about upcharges or price changes, but they do not see how costly products can be. Gloves, acetone, acrylic, polishes, alcohol, etc are bought very often. There’s so many little things that need to be purchased regularly and it adds up to be very costly. While in school, I slowly bought a lot of things. After school, I have been diligent about replacing equipment and products as necessary.
