We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kirsten King a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kirsten , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
Working in corporate America as a single mother was very challenging for me, especially having small kids in elementary. I never thought about starting my own business, but I knew that working a 9-5 was not totally going to allow me to be the freedom I need nor was I going to be working doing something i passionately love. While working my 9-5 I began venturing into club promotions in which it became very lucrative for me very fast. Once I began making my bi-weekly paycheck within one Saturday night as a promoter, I knew then God had a bigger plan for me. My days at work begin to frustrate me as I was spending more time thinking about my side-hustle and desiring to make it bigger and expand. Therefore, I created a plan of action to leave my job and become an entrepreneur doing promotions and marketing. Within about 3 months, I left my job in Human Resources to pursue full-time Entrepreneurship. The first day of Entrepreneurship was pure bliss for me it felt like that was where I belonged the entire time. Where many had regrets leaving their job, I never thought twice nor looked back. As the days went by i begin networking, utilizing my resources/connections, & setting the foundation of my business for growth. I got a mentor and I researched day and night on the promotions and marketing business. I figured out how I was going to market myself, what avenue I was going to use, gather a team of like-minded individuals and I’ve been consistent every since. 13yrs later my business is still blessed.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Starting out as a party promoter my business KKO Marketing evolved into me teaching business owners, Entrepreneurs, brands and public figures how to build a successful platform utilizing social media marketing and advertising. I assist with creating strategies, campaigns, promotions and advertisement that increase engagement, generate revenue and exposure. What separates me apart from the rest is that I motivate my clients from the inside out to start with believing in themselves then their business to reach the desired goals they have. My belief is that once you can see it for yourself, when we create the strategy or the plan the execution is easy. Some of my services include Social Media Strategy, One on One Coaching, Social Media Management, & Radio & Billboard consulting and advertising. I am most proud of sustaining my business over the past 13yrs and being identified as the go-to person in my market for quality, professional marketing and advertising services and having purposeful events that allot them the opportunity to get to know me as a person, an Entrepreneur, & what makes me so successful.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I built my audience on social media by being consistent, being myself, sharing my why, being positive and most importantly posting value. I had to first identify my target audience, my niche was and marry the 2 with my brand. From there I made sure that daily at least 3 times per day I showed up and I talked directly to that core group of people through my content, whether it was photos of me, my family, working or memes, videos, and worded posts. I knew many were inspired by me being a single mom and Entrepreneur for years, so I was sure to show behind the scenes of my life being transparent and also relatable to others in the same situation. I also gave FREE valuable tips as it relates to my expertise in marketing and advertising to help others grow. People love free value it makes it easier for them to trust and pay you for your services. In addition, I also built my following by creating signature annual events such as The Mother Son Dance & The Single Mothers Brunch, these gave me the opportunity to meet and connect with more people via social media. Once your audience begin to see that you’re valuable and worth a follow they will follow, engage, interact, & anticipate your posts daily.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think what helped me build my reputation in the market is great social media marketing, consistency, professionalism, delivering results, growth, expertise and surrounding myself with the right professionals that refer my business quite frequently to others. In addition, my clientele has extensive networking circles that they share their successes with when working with my company.
